Morning always arrived too early.
The first sound I heard was my mother's gentle voice.
"Phawin... wake up. You'll be late."
I slowly opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling for a moment before sitting up. Another school day. Another ordinary morning.
Outside my room, the house was already alive.
My oldest brother was searching for his keys.
Another brother was arguing over whose turn it was to use the bathroom.
My little sister laughed so loudly that even our neighbors could probably hear her.
I rubbed my eyes and smiled to myself.
Our home was never quiet.
After breakfast, I picked up my school bag and stepped outside.
The walk to school wasn't long. I knew every corner of the streets, every small shop, every tree that lined the road.
By the time I reached the school gate, students had already filled the courtyard.
Some were playing games.
Some were finishing homework at the last minute.
Others were laughing with their friends.
I walked past them quietly.
No one ignored me.
No one surrounded me either.
That was the way I liked it.
Our classroom sat on the second floor. The desks were old, their wooden surfaces covered with tiny scratches left by students from years before us.
I always chose the same seat.
Near the window.
From there, I could see the playground, the clouds drifting across the sky, and the wind moving through the trees whenever my mind wandered during class.
As I unpacked my books, I noticed the familiar sounds of classmates chatting.
One voice stood out from the others.
Loud.
Confident.
Always laughing.
I looked up for only a second.
There he was.
Narin.
He was shorter than me, surrounded by classmates as usual. He seemed to know everyone in the room. Someone jokingly pushed him, and he laughed before playfully pushing them back.
He lived in a completely different world from mine.
I looked away and opened my notebook.
At that moment...
He was just another classmate.
