"Sophie, today I will tell you the true story of your past. Now, I advise you to listen carefully. When I was just a child, I was chosen by the crown as the heir to the throne. But unfortunately, this position made me rather... arrogant."
But this was his backstory.
Why was he telling me about his life when he said that he would tell me about mine?
I took another sip of the water, deciding to listen to the whole story before saying anything.
"My elder brother James was fifteen at that time. Now, he was truly happy for me when I got chosen as the heir, and kept congratulating me with a smile. But I felt a bit too much pride at that. So when I became the king, I... kicked him out of this palace. I told him that as the king, I was the only one who deserved to live here. This made him infuriated, as of course, he deserved to be, so he hastily left with his wife, mistakenly leaving his only daughter behind. Now, since I had promised myself that I would never talk to James again, I was forced to raise his daughter by myself. Henceforth, I did it, but unfortunately, in my anger, I raised her as if she weren't even part of the family. And now... I regret it."
His voice cracked, and I saw that his eyes looked eerily misty.
Was he... crying?
"Umm... Why would that make me angry? And... this is your story. Not mine. Why did you tell me this?" my confusion was like an ocean—I couldn't find anything solid to make sense out of, and the endless water just deprived me of any kind of understanding.
"Sophie, I told you this story because James's daughter is... you."
Understanding dawned immediately, but my thoughts were too tangled to know how to react.
I didn't even know what I was feeling.
Anger?
Fear?
I inhaled deeply, and whispered, "So... that means that you're my uncle? The princes and the princess are my... cousins?"
My heart began to thump harder than it had ever done before, and I felt... sick.
Very sick.
He had really made me his servant?
Now it made sense that the crown had chosen me.
I deserved to be the heir.
King Edmond cleared his throat, "I know you must be debating with your feelings right now, but with careful planning, I have come to a decision, if you will agree, of course."
I knew he had been planning.
Now everything made so much more sense.
I looked at him expectantly, emptying the glass of water.
I had never deserved to drink tap water in my life.
I always deserved this royal water.
Yet I had been drinking tap water my whole life.
Raised as a servant.
In truth the heir to the throne.
"Sophie, you are kindhearted, and brave, and you even know the feelings of the other servants now. Since you have been chosen by the crown, you deserve to be the heir to the throne more than anyone else. And who am I to break the royal tradition? So if you agree, I'll write a letter to your parents and we will proceed to hold a proper ceremony for you."
I took a deep breath, and decided to leave it upon those who had been wronged, "Ask my parents."
He nodded, "I'll write a letter to them right away. And then I'll tell this news to my wife and children. They don't know yet."
I nodded, and walked away with shaky hands. Erica asked why I was looking so confused, and she was my best friend, so I trusted her with the secret.
"Woah, really? I always thought there were some similarities between you guys. So if you become queen, you'll give us extra rights, right?"
"Of course," I muttered.
"But I guess you must also be having difficulty processing it all, huh?"
"Yeah..."
The queen came up just then and asked me to come to the dining room.
"Please sit down," she whispered.
I sat at the edge.
"We just found out!" said Prince Charles, looking anywhere but at my face.
"So, the letter's being sent," whispered the queen.
Princess Laura looked at me and whispered, "I guess you can call us by our first names now."
I blushed, but to my savior, King Edmond came into the room. Not that that was any less awkward.
"Your parents said they'll agree if I will let them in the house again, Luna. I agreed. They're on their way."
My parents.
Why would they just leave me here and forget about me though?
But I guess they must have been angry...
I didn't know what to think. I didn't even know how to breathe properly at that moment.
........
My parents arrived and the royals finally held a proper ceremony announcing that I was the heir, and after that I was treated like royalty, which I practically was.
My parents were nice to me, and I finally got to know them.
After all those years.
And then, I was literally the second opinion for any important decision, which was crazy, considering I was only fifteen.
........
Forty years later, they made me the queen.
I was the symbol of change our world needed.
Everyone loved that I was the queen, and of course, by then, everyone knew the true story of my past.
''Things have gone a long way, huh?" said Erica as she sat on a chair next to my throne.
"Yeah,"
Despite all that had happened, I was still Erica's best friend.
Because we should always be loyal to the people who are trustworthy and kind—because you never know, they could be a lot more powerful than you would expect.
