極西帝國「拂菻」帝國，原型為拜占庭。

西路舊案之後，一份與白甲客阿克留斯有關的案卷，被送入稷下春秋院。

卷中所載，本該是一道護送商隊的軍令；可譯文、火漆、簽押與行軍時刻彼此不合，像是有人在萬里之外，將一場護行改寫成一場清剿。

春秋院行卷生「司馬蘅」奉命前往極西，帶著白甲舊案的殘卷與疑證，遠赴拂菻帝國。她原以為此行只是校卷、查令、補足西路舊案最後一段空白，卻在踏入聖城後與聖城調查官「奧蕾莉亞」，意外捲入帝國王廷、聖城與白甲軍團之間的暗流。

拂菻帝國已在黃昏中站了太久。

當一個帝國已走到垂暮之時，它還能不能用承認舊罪，替自己留下最後一點顏面。

那一日，暮鐘城的高塔上，鐘聲再次響起。

帝國的鐘聲迴盪在暮光之中。

這一部《暮鐘城》延續《一劍艷影赴未央》的西路舊案。

撰寫一個極西的強盛帝國響起了垂暮的鐘聲。

與《君臨》對應的是，《君臨》是百年之前的東方王朝崛起

而《暮鐘城》是一個已經強盛了三百年的帝國暮年。
