The next afternoon, I met my friend Emmet at his house. Emmet is one of my new friends, even though we've only been friends for about twelve weeks, he's my only friend within fifty miles that's actually enjoyable! He never cared about girls, or stupid Ricardo Bell, or playing basketball just to impress other people. Emmet is a theater kid, and has been doing theater for three years. Vlad also started doing theater as well, and it seems so fun!
We were making jokes for the hangout, before more kids came, because Emmet's mom invited a few kids from the school.
Just then, the door to the backyard opened. My classmate Lily Cameron and her 8-year old brother Jace zipped to the "tiny shelter" formerly known as the "Lemonade Stand," where Emmet and I were joking.
"Hi guys!" they both greet.
A few more kids came, but while we were waiting on Emmet to do the chores he didn't do yesterday, so me, Jace, Diego Lopez, and this new kid named Liam walked around the neigborhood.
While we were walking, Jace beams, "Guys, do you want to do the new trend?"
"What new trend?" I ask.
"Yeah what?" Liam asks.
"You know," Diego replied. "The one Ricardo started teaching us?"
Of course Ricardo's involved.
"You'll both see." Jace says to both me and Liam.
Then, we spotted a red, shiny car.
"Perfect!" Jace runs over to the red car. Diego, Liam, and I follow.
"Hawk Tuah!" Jace spits on the car window.
"That's the trend?" I ask doubtfully.
"Hauuk Tuah!" Diego spits on the car.
"Finn, spit on it!" Jace motioned to the car.
"Uhh," I try telling Jace. "Maybe we should try another car..."
Jace waved my hesitation away, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. “Come on, Phineas! It’s just for fun! Besides, it’s a stupid car! Who cares?”
Liam looked uncertain, glancing at me as if seeking confirmation. “Is this really a trend? Seems kinda gross…”
“I don’t think it’s a trend,” I said, my stomach twisting at the idea of defacing someone else's property. “What if someone sees us?”
“Relax!” Diego chimed in, his excitement bubbling over. “It’s just a little spit! It’s not like we’re breaking anything! It’s harmless.”
“Dude, think of it this way: if we don’t do this, what’s the worst that can happen?” Jace challenged, clearly caught up in the moment. “We’ll miss out on being cool. Isn’t that what we’re all after?”
