我是個在碼頭扛貨的孤兒，窮得連名字都沒有。
機緣巧合下，我成了城北墨家莊的灑掃小工。老板墨漪冷漠嚴苛、行蹤不定，動輒扣人工錢，卻會在發薪日偷偷給每個人都備好合用的物件。
直到老板遠行歸來，像變了一個人——陰郁暴躁，滿屋烈酒，連靠近都會被凍傷。
我只知道拼命守住這座莊子，別讓它荒了、亂了，等老板回來時，知道還有人等他。
後來我識字、學武、管賬、談生意、替老板跑江湖，從一個連“窗櫺”都不會寫的小工，長成了獨當一面的管事。
再後來，老板帶回了一位溫潤如玉的小公子，說：“這是湘瀾，我家里人。”
原來我不是在替老板守一座莊子——而是在守一個家。
