[Group: The Cheer Squad 📣] (Mavie, Chloe, Sophia, and other 10th-grade girls)
Chloe (02:03 AM): Girls, did you see Lucas in the hallway today? He couldn't stop looking in Mavie's direction. Honestly, I still don't buy your breakup. Sophia (02:05 AM): Chloe, let Mavie breathe lol. She needs to focus on the chemistry test tomorrow. Mavie (02:06 AM): Thanks, Sophia! And Chloe, we broke up two months ago. He moved on, I moved on. We're just two acquaintances going to the same school now. Chloe (02:07 AM): Right... acquaintances. Tell me another one, Mavie. But look, you better keep an eye out, because the 12th-grade seniors were totally checking him out at practice today. That girl Larissa from 12th B was practically on the field.
[Group: Football Talk ⚽🔥] (Lucas, Leo, Noah, and 11th/12th-grade guys)
Noah (02:10 AM): Bro, practice today was crazy. But yo, the gossip in the 12th-grade locker room is that Hugo wants to slide into Mavie's DMs. He asked if she's really single. Leo (02:12 AM): Hugo from the 12th grade? That guy is a joke lol. But what's up, Lucas? Are you gonna let a senior make a move, or is that still your territory? Lucas (02:14 AM): What territory? Hugo can do whatever he wants. Mavie and I are done, you guys know that. My focus is the championship. Noah (02:15 AM): Sure, bro. That's why you almost popped the ball when he walked past her in the hallway today lol.
[Group: High School Chat 🎒] (Massive group chat with 10th, 11th, and 12th graders)
ns216.73.216.69da2Matheus [12th Grade] (02:20 AM): Anyone got the history notes for tomorrow's test? I'm desperate. Larissa [12th Grade] (02:22 AM): Ask Mavie from the 10th grade. That girl is a study machine, her grades are flawless. Hugo [12th Grade] (02:25 AM): Speaking of Mavie... anyone got her number? I need to ask her a "question" about a school project lol 😉 Lucas (02:27 AM): Her number is in the student council group, Hugo. Just look it up there. But I think she's busy studying for more important things.
Right after replying to the school's main group chat, Lucas locked his phone screen, but he couldn't catch a wink of sleep. He tossed and turned in bed, staring at the dark ceiling of his room. The digital clock on his nightstand read 2:35 AM.
The thought of Hugo or any other senior trying to talk to Mavie kept him wide awake. Without thinking too much so he wouldn't lose his nerve, he pulled up her contact and called.
The phone rang three times before it was picked up. Mavie’s voice came through muffled, a sleepy whisper, but clearly surprised.
"Lucas? Have you lost your mind? It’s almost three in the morning," she said, keeping her voice low so she wouldn't wake anyone up in her house.
Lucas smiled to himself in the dark, feeling a familiar wave of comfort just from hearing her voice.
"Hey, my little doll," he whispered back, using the nickname only he used when they were completely alone. "I couldn't sleep. I saw the messages in that stupid school group chat."
Mavie let out a low laugh, trying to sound annoyed but failing. "You shouldn't care about what Hugo says. And you didn't have to reply like that in the group either. Chloe already texted me saying you sounded jealous."
"And what if I am?" Lucas countered, his tone turning softer and more sincere. "I just wanted to hear your voice. What are you doing?"
"Trying to sleep for the chemistry test, Captain. Which is exactly what you should be doing too," she replied, though she snuggled deeper and more comfortably into her blankets, with absolutely no intention of hanging up.
