維爾汀城，有人管它叫世界第八大奇蹟，也有人叫它進口白蘭地與兵庫牛的無底胃袋。北邊是短吻鱷和鷺鳥橫行的沼澤，西邊是野牛和名貴野放馬匹奔馳的紅土草原，城裡則是鐵路、港口與空艇交織的國際熔爐。

身家萬貫的軍政要員、鞋底踩著爛泥的捕獸人、穿燕尾服的內閣秘書、滿身汗臭的碼頭工人，以及遊走在法律邊緣的賞金獵人，操著六種語言擠在同一個街區裡。小偷、貴婦、法外狂徒與地主，每個人都在這座海港大城的熱浪與酸臭汗水裡掙扎度日。

這裡每天都在發生一堆鳥事。

有時候是一匹在深夜晃到警局門口的汗血馬，有時候是蠢學生打球砸爛吊扇引發的事故。

這些事毫無關聯，畢竟在維爾汀城，死幾個人、斷幾天電、丟幾張債券，實在是再正常不過的日常。

真的，不過就只是那堆鳥事罷了。
