CHAPTER 3: UNIT SEVEN

The doors sealed shut with a heavy metallic thud.

A vibration ran through the room as the lock engaged.

No turning back.

No exits.

Just 11 players inside a shrinking world.

Daiki exhaled slowly.

The chamber was smaller than it looked from outside. The walls curved slightly inward, designed to compress space—not physically, but mentally.

Pressure building with every second.

In the center of the room sat a single football.

That was it.

No coach.

No explanation.

Just a ball and eleven strangers forced into the same equation.

A soft mechanical sound echoed above them.

Then a screen dropped from the ceiling.

UNIT SEVEN — INITIALIZATION

A pause.

Then—

COHESION TEST: BEGIN

Immediately, the screen flashed again.

A formation appeared:

Then it changed.

Then again.

2–3–5

It kept shifting randomly.

A voice spoke:

“You will not choose positions.”

“You will fight for them.”

A tall player scoffed.

“So we’re supposed to just… argue and play?”

Another stepped forward aggressively.

“Give me striker. I don’t care what system this is.”

The tension started building instantly.

Daiki stayed quiet.

He was watching something else.

Not the players.

The reactions.

Some were aggressive immediately.

Some hesitated.

Some were already calculating silently.

That was more important than skill.

A calm voice broke through the noise.

“I’ll take control of this unit.”

Everyone turned.

Reiji Kagami had stepped forward.

Rank 1.

He didn’t look at anyone individually.

Only the room as a whole.

“I don’t care who plays where,” he said calmly.

“But if you slow me down, I’ll remove you from the play.”

Silence.

Not fear exactly.

More like recognition of inevitability.

A second voice followed immediately.

“No.”

It was Daiki.

Everyone turned again.

Even Reiji.

Daiki stepped forward slowly.

Not aggressively.

But firmly.

“We don’t win anything if one person decides everything.”

A faint pause.

Then he added:

“This isn’t a solo system. It’s a survival unit.”

A few players muttered.

“Who is this guy…?”

“Rank 47 talking back to Rank 1?”

Reiji tilted his head slightly.

For the first time, his expression changed—barely.

Interest.

The screen above them flickered again.

POSITION WAR INITIATED

The ball in the center lit up faintly.

Then—

A countdown appeared.

“I’ll take striker first!”

Another intercepted him instantly.

“No chance!”

Chaos broke immediately.

Daiki didn’t move yet.

He was still watching.

Then he saw it.

The system wasn’t waiting for them to agree.

It was forcing conflict.

Not fast.

Efficient.

He didn’t chase the ball.

He cut off space.

Two players collapsed under his positioning without even touching him.

Daiki noticed instantly.

He’s not playing football.

He’s controlling decisions.

Reiji stepped in—

Intercepted.

Clean.

Instant control.

Not physically.

The angle simply stopped existing.

Daiki’s eyes widened slightly.

So that’s it.

He doesn’t react to the ball.

He removes options.

Because everyone was focused on Reiji.

Daiki looked down at it.

Just for a moment.

He moved.

Not toward Reiji.

Not toward goal.

But into space no one was watching.

The moment it started—

Everything accelerated.

Players collided mentally and physically.

Positions were being stolen in real time.

But something strange happened.

Reiji stopped.

He didn’t chase anymore.

He looked at Daiki.

Because Daiki wasn’t playing like the others.

He wasn’t fighting for the ball.

He was studying the system’s gaps.

Reiji spoke calmly.

“You see it too.”

Daiki didn’t answer.

He was already moving.

A quick pass.

Then another.

Not flashy.

But precise.

For the first time—

The chaos shifted slightly.

Not controlled.

But guided.

One player shouted:

“He’s linking play?!”

Another:

“No—he’s not attacking… he’s stabilizing it!”

Reiji finally moved again.

This time faster.

He intercepted Daiki’s passing lane instantly.

The flow broke.

Silence for half a second.

Then Reiji spoke again.

“You’re not trying to win.”

A pause.

“You’re trying to understand.”

Daiki met his eyes.

“For now.”

A faint smile appeared on Reiji’s face.

The first real emotion he had shown.

“Good.”

The screen above them changed.

UNIT SEVEN ANALYSIS COMPLETE

Then:

KEY PLAYERS IDENTIFIED

Reiji Kagami (Core Controller)
Daiki Okoro (Adaptive Linker)

The system voice returned.

“From this point onward…”

A pause.

“…you are no longer 11 individuals.”

“You are a structure.”

The walls of the chamber shifted slightly.

Closer.

Smaller.

Heavier.

And Reiji spoke quietly, almost to himself:

“Now this becomes interesting.”

Daiki didn’t reply.

But he understood one thing clearly.

This wasn’t a training session.

It was the birth of a hierarchy.

And someone inside Unit 7—

Was going to break it first.
