CHAPTER 2: SURVIVAL RANKINGS

The silence after the first phase didn’t last long.

It never did.

A sharp tone echoed through the facility.

BEEP—

The circular field vanished beneath their feet, dissolving into darkness. One by one, the remaining players were pulled back into the main hall as if the system had never been real.

Daiki staggered slightly as solid ground returned.

His heartbeat was still unstable.

Not from fear anymore—

But from calculation.

He looked around.

Fewer players now.

Not two hundred.

Not even half.

Only the ones who adapted fast enough.

Above them, the giant screen flickered.

Then appeared:

A pause.

Then the number changed again.

FINAL EVALUATION PHASE INITIATED

A cold voice returned.

“You have survived the first rule-breaking simulation.”

“Now you will be ranked.”

The floor lit up again—but this time, not as a pitch.

It formed a massive grid of names.

Hundreds of empty slots.

Then slowly, names began to appear.

Some already locked in.

Some still blank.

A system judging them without permission.

A player shouted, “Ranked? Based on what?! We barely played properly!”

No answer came.

Only data.

Daiki’s eyes scanned the screen.

Then he saw it.

His name.

He froze slightly.

Forty-seven.

Out of 183 survivors.

Not bad.

Not great either.

Just… middle.

But what caught his attention wasn’t his rank.

It was the names above him.

The moment those names appeared—

The atmosphere changed.

Because now they weren’t anonymous players anymore.

They were targets.

A player near Daiki whispered, “Rank 1… Reiji Kagami? Who is that?”

No one answered.

Because across the room—

A single player sat calmly on the floor.

Legs crossed.

Eyes closed.

He didn’t even look at the screen.

Like the ranking didn’t surprise him at all.

Or maybe—

Like it didn’t matter.

The system spoke again.

“These rankings are not based on goals.”

A pause.

“They are based on influence over the field.”

The screen flickered.

“Who controlled space.”

“Who controlled decision-making.”

“Who forced outcomes.”

Daiki’s eyes narrowed.

So that’s how it worked.

It wasn’t about scoring.

It was about control.

A new alert flashed.

SECOND PHASE RULES UNLOCKED

The hall darkened slightly.

Then the system continued:

“Survivors will now be divided into units of 11.”

A pause.

“But these are not teams.”

A long silence.

“They are experiments.”

The screen split into groups.

Players were automatically assigned.

Daiki’s name slid into:

UNIT 7

He exhaled slowly.

Then he saw something that made his stomach tighten.

Across the screen—

One name appeared in the same unit.

REIJI KAGAMI — UNIT 7

A low murmur spread across the hall.

“Wait… Rank 1 is in our group?”

“That’s not fair…”

“That unit is already decided then.”

Daiki didn’t speak.

But his focus sharpened.

So the system wasn’t random.

It was mixing monsters with average players.

To force evolution.

Or collapse.

Then—

Footsteps echoed.

From the opposite side of the hall.

A group of players walked forward.

Different aura entirely.

They didn’t look confused.

They looked selected.

Among them, a tall player with silver hair glanced at the screen.

RANK 2: LIANG ZHE.

He smiled slightly.

“So I’m grouped with Rank 1?”

His eyes drifted across the hall.

Then briefly—

Met Daiki’s.

A split-second pressure hit Daiki’s chest.

Not intimidation.

Expectation.

Like he had already been measured.

And found interesting.

A sudden chime.

UNIT TRANSFER COMPLETE

The floor beneath UNIT 7 lit up.

Daiki’s group stepped forward automatically.

The doors ahead opened.

Not to a field this time.

But to something worse.

A sealed training chamber.

Inside—

No grass.

No stadium.

Just a tight arena with walls closing in slightly.

And a single ball resting at the center.

The system spoke one final time.

“Unit 7.”

“This is your first cohesion test.”

“Work together…”

A pause.

“…or eliminate each other faster.”

The doors sealed shut.

Silence.

Then—

Reiji Kagami stood up slowly.

For the first time, he looked at everyone in the room.

His eyes stopped briefly on Daiki.

Then he spoke.

“One of you will decide how we play.”

A pause.

“I don’t follow systems.”

“I create them.”

Daiki felt it immediately.

This wasn’t just a match starting.

This was the beginning of internal war.

Because in a unit of monsters—

The real enemy wasn’t outside.

It was the person who decides what football becomes.
