The Last Missed Call

The phone rang at 7:12 PM.

Riya smiled when she saw the name on the screen.

Dad Calling.

She was angry with him.

That morning he had forgotten to attend her school performance because of work.

She rejected the call.

A few seconds later, another call came.

She rejected it again.

Then a message arrived.

"I'm sorry, princess. I'll make it up to you tonight."

Still upset, she didn't reply.

She wanted him to feel guilty.

She wanted him to know how hurt she was.

She never imagined those would be the last words she would ever receive from him.

An hour later, there was a knock on the door.

Two police officers stood outside.

Her mother collapsed before they even spoke.

There had been an accident.

Her father was gone.

For months, Riya couldn't sleep.

Not because her father had died.

But because of the missed call.

Every night she stared at her phone.

Two missed calls.

One unread message.

If she had answered, she could have said goodbye.

If she had answered, she could have said she loved him.

If she had answered, maybe her heart wouldn't hurt this much.

Years passed.

One day, while cleaning an old drawer, she found a birthday card her father had written before he died.

Inside was a note.

"Dear Princess,

One day you'll make mistakes. You'll say things you don't mean. You'll miss opportunities. You'll regret things.

But don't spend your life punishing yourself.

The people who truly love you don't want your guilt.

They want your happiness.

And no matter what happens, never forget that I love you more than anything in this world."

Riya cried as she held the card.

For years she believed her father's final memory of her was rejection.

Now she realized something else.

His final message wasn't anger.

It wasn't disappointment.

It was love.

Always love.

She looked at the old missed calls one last time and whispered,

"I'm sorry, Dad."

Then she smiled through her tears.

Because if her father could answer, she knew exactly what he would say.

"I know, princess. Come here."

And for the first time in years, the missed call no longer felt like a wound.
