He stalks, crouches,

twitches, and watches

that lizard from afar.

An aroma of dirt, waste, and rain;

a smooth, scaly coat of green,

and a tail as long as a book,

what a meal this lizard is!

He pounces,

grabs the lizard by the neck,

and shakes it back and forth,

but the lizard will not pass

for it must return home.

A dark unknown

precious to it

where no cat has ever gone.

It droops, plays dead

and makes the cat proud.

A gift for his owners,

An undead soul

actually alive.

The cat readies itself for dinner,

a juicy lizard he caught himself

until his owner tells him to scram.

“Leave him be! This lizard

has done nothing wrong!

This lizard

is part of nature

like you and me!”

The cat scurries,

too proud of his catch

to care about that lizard’s

future.

He takes it to the dining room

and buries it under

the cotton rug.

“My catch! My catch!”

The lizard escapes,

bloodied and bruised,

the cat right behind.

“Spare me! Spare me!”

The cat traps it

in the corner,

a dusty environment

where life meets death
