Not dramatically. Not with the weight of ceremony that something this significant probably deserved. Just Elara, at her desk at two in the morning, three days after Seraphine had sat in Mira's bakery and drunk three cups of tea and told them everything she knew about the Eclipse Priest, writing:

He had brought them again that morning—she had stopped pretending to herself that she was not looking for them, had stopped performing the indifference she did not feel—and she was putting them in water when he came through the door with his key and his coat and the particular quality of presence that she was learning to identify as something that happened in her chest when he entered a room.
"Tonight," she said, without preamble, because she had learned that he preferred directness and she was learning to prefer it too. "We want to do the full merge tonight."
He set down the things he was carrying.
"Both of you," he said.
"Both of us. We agreed this morning." She turned to look at him. "We've been building toward it. Seraphine's information about the Eclipse Priest—we don't have the luxury of gradual anymore. He knows where we are. He knows the merge is progressing. Every day we wait is a day he has to find a way to stop it permanently."
Kael was quiet for a moment.
"The partial merges have been going well," he said, which was not an argument against but was clearly the beginning of one.
"They have. Which is why we think we're ready." She held his gaze. "This is not a decision I made lightly or alone. Nyx and I have discussed it every night for a week. We've been mapping what it would require, what the risks are, what it looks like if it goes wrong." She paused. "We know the risks."
"Tell me them."
"If we're not sufficiently integrated, the merge could fragment rather than complete. We could end up less whole than we started, with both halves damaged." She said it flatly, because she had looked at this directly and decided looking at it directly was better than not. "If the power surge is too great and I can't contain it, there is a possibility of—of significant destruction. Uncontrolled shadow magic at full force is not a small thing." Another pause. "And if something goes wrong in the space between—in the moment of the actual merge, when we're neither one nor the other—there may not be anything to come back to."
He looked at her for a long moment.
"And you want to do this tonight."
"We want to do this tonight," she said. "There is a difference."
Something moved in his expression. She had become considerably better at reading him over two weeks, the particular vocabulary of a face that had learned to keep most things internal. What she saw now was not fear—not for himself—but the specific quality of a person who loves something and is trying very hard not to make that love into a cage.
"Alright," he said.
Just that. No argument, no further qualification. The trust in it was enormous.
"The Chamber?" she asked.
"The Chamber amplifies what you already have. It will make the process easier." He paused. "It will also make the power surge more contained, which addresses your second concern."
"And the third one?"
"I will be inside with you."
She blinked. "You said—the Chamber only allows—"
"The Chamber only allows the two halves of a split soul to interact," he said. "It does not restrict observers." A pause. "I have been outside every other time because you needed the space and the privacy. Tonight, if something goes wrong in the between space—" His jaw tightened slightly. "I am not standing outside."
Elara looked at him.
For three hundred years of having stood outside while she was somewhere he could not reach.
"Okay," she said.
Mira took the news the way Mira took most things that were enormous and terrifying and irreversible, which was to immediately start making food.
"Sit," she said, appearing in Elara's kitchen with ingredients she had apparently brought herself. "You're going to eat something substantial before you do whatever tonight is."
"Mira—"
"Sit, Elara. You can save two worlds on a full stomach just as easily as an empty one and considerably more effectively." She pointed at the chair. "Both of you. The large one too."
Kael sat, which surprised Elara and apparently surprised him slightly too—the look of a person who does not often get directed into chairs and is not sure how to resist this particular person's direction.
Mira cooked. The kitchen filled with the smell of it, warm and ordinary, the most ordinary smell in the world on the least ordinary evening.
"I want to say something," Mira said, not looking up from the stove. "And I want both of you to let me finish before you respond."
"Alright," Elara said.
"I have known you for five years." Mira stirred something. "I have watched you be afraid of the dark for five years. I have watched you apologize for taking up space, talk yourself out of things you deserved, and convince yourself that the missing hours and the exhaustion were something wrong with you rather than evidence that you were something extraordinary." She paused. "I did not know how to fix any of that. I didn't know what it was. But I watched you carry it and I worried and I made you tea and I showed up with my rolling pin and I did not know what else to do."
The kitchen was very quiet.
"Now I know what it was," Mira said. "And tonight you're going to fix it. And I'm going to stand outside a magical structure in the woods and guard the perimeter and probably hit something with my rolling pin, and that's going to be my contribution to this." She turned around, finally, and her eyes were bright. "And I need you to know that whatever you are afterward—whatever version of you comes out of that Chamber—I will make you tea and show up with my rolling pin and it will still be you and we will still be us."
Elara stood up and crossed the kitchen, and hugged her friend, who hugged back with the specific force of someone communicating something that would not fit in words.
"Thank you," Elara said, into her shoulder.
"Don't thank me. Eat your dinner."
They ate.
The three of them, in Elara's small kitchen, with the evening light going gold through the window and the moonflowers on the counter and the particular quality of a last ordinary hour before something irreversible.
Kael ate without comment and listened to Mira tell a story about a customer at the bakery who had ordered the wrong cake for the wrong occasion and the diplomatic complexity of telling him so, and he made the sound that was his laugh—brief, low, genuine—at the part about the second cake, and Elara watched him and felt something in her chest that was not complicated at all.
Afterward, washing up, Mira said quietly to Elara: "He's terrified."
"I know."
"He doesn't show it."
"I know that too." Elara dried a bowl. "He's been here before. Versions of it. Watching me try to break the curse and not making it."
"This time is different."
"Yes."
"How do you know?"
Elara looked at the moonflowers on the counter. "Because this time I'm choosing it. Every time before, neither of us had access to the choice." She set the bowl down. "The curse kept us from being able to choose. This time we're choosing. Both of us. Together." She paused. "That's different."
Mira looked at her for a moment. Then she dried her hands on her apron and went to get her rolling pin.
The Whispering Woods at midnight were something else entirely.
Not the woods she trained in, not the morning-light clearing where she was learning to command shadows—this was the deep part, the part she had avoided her entire life because some old instinct in her had always known that this was where the wall between worlds was thinnest and something in her was not ready to know that.
She was ready now.
The Chamber glowed ahead of them through the trees, silver-bright, the runes on its surface pulsing with a regularity that had changed since the first time she had come here. Faster. Like a heartbeat building toward something.
It knew.
Mira peeled off to her designated position at the tree line, rolling pin in hand, the look of someone who has made peace with their specific role in an impossible situation. "I'll be here," she said. "Both of you."
Both of you, meaning all three of them. Elara and Nyx and the thing they were going to become.
Kael put his hand briefly on Mira's shoulder as he passed, which was a more significant gesture from him than it would have been from anyone else, and Mira stood slightly straighter, and then they were at the Chamber door.

"No," Elara said. "It hasn't."
They looked at each other.
Two halves of one person, standing on opposite sides of the only boundary left between them.
"I want to tell you something," Nyx said. "Before we do this."
"Tell me."
"I have been alone for three hundred years." She said it simply, without performance. "I have ruled and fought and survived, and I have done all of it alone because there was no other option. And I have—" She paused. "I have read your journal every morning for months. Every ordinary, detailed, careful entry about the candles and the customers and the light through the window and Mira's flour and the way you describe the shop at closing time. And I—" She stopped.
"It made you feel less alone," Elara said.
"You were the only person who could," Nyx said. "Because you were the only person who was—" She paused. "Who was also me. Who understood from the inside." A breath. "I want you to know that whatever we become tonight, I am glad it is with you. That the other half of me is—you." She looked at Elara with those violet eyes. "Specifically you."
Elara's throat was tight. "You're going to make me cry before we do the magic."
"Noted. My apologies."
"Don't apologize." Elara stepped up to the mirror. "I'm glad too. That the other half is you." She placed her hand against the surface. "Specifically you."
Nyx placed her hand against the other side.
Their palms aligned.
"Together," Nyx said.
"Together," Elara agreed.
And they pushed through.
The pain was real.
She had known it would be—Kael had told her, Nyx had told her, the ring had given her the faint echo of what it felt like—but knowing and experiencing were entirely different things. Mira's eyes went bright immediately.
"That is private information," Mira said, voice not entirely steady.
"I know. I'm sorry." Lira reached for her hand. "She wrote that it was the loneliest thing she'd ever witnessed. Someone caring that much for the half of her that didn't know she existed." She squeezed. "She was grateful. I'm grateful. We're grateful."
Mira looked at her for a long moment.
Then she said, "You look like both of you."
"I am both of me."
"That's going to take some getting used to."
"For me too."
Mira looked at her—really looked, the way she had been looking at Elara for five years, reading the face she knew and finding it familiar and also finding something new in it.
"Are you happy?" Mira said.
Lira thought about it. About the whole. About both. About three hundred years ending, and something new beginning in their place.
"Yes," she said. "I think I actually am."
Later, when Mira had gone home, and Kael had walked with Lira back to the bookshop and stood in the doorway with the look he had been wearing since the Chamber—still open, still slightly undone, three hundred years of composure taking the evening off—she said:
"Ask me again."
He looked at her.
"The question you asked on the balcony," she said. "Before the rehearsal dinner. Before everything." She held his gaze. "Ask me again."
He was quiet for a moment.
Then: "Marry me."
"Yes," Lira said. Simply, completely, with the full weight of both halves of her soul behind the word. "Yes. Absolutely yes."
He smiled.
She had seen him smile before—the rare genuine version, the one that changed everything—but this was different. This was the smile of three hundred years of searching arriving, finally, somewhere it could stop.
