Twelve-year-old Serena has lived her entire life in neglect. Ever since her father's death when she was five, she has never had a real friend. Then she moves to the Midwest, where she meets a mysterious boy named Billy and a herd of predatory animals who claim her new farm home.

As the two tweens grow close, they will learn about the weird past of the farm, as well as Billy's deepest secret. This is to Serena's stepfather's disbelief, and he tries everything to pull the two apart.

Then, the dreaded day comes. Serena and Billy are separated. Mustering up all their willpower, they must find each other again and convince Serena's stepfather that they are the only ones who can save the farm, as well as Billy himself.

The stakes are high for both tweens. With the predatory animals by their side, they will embark on a coming-of-age journey that will teach Serena the truth behind what she calls "The Bird Boy".
