Fidèle turned her key in the lock of room number nine hundred ninety eight and opened the door.
The door eased open, revealing a bed against the back wall, two nightstands on either side of the bed, a wardrobe in the front right corner and a square window in the left wall.
The room smelt vaguely of expensive perfume, old books, and cigar smoke.
She closed the door, placed her bags down on the bed and sat down next to them.
The mattress curved under her weight, the white down comforter wrinkling around her.
She placed the key on the left nightstand as she removed her flats.
She grabbed the bag to the right of her and opened it with a subtle pop.
On top of small stacks of folded clothes there was an old newspaper folded in half.
The paper was thin and splotchy with age and the black ink had faded to a navy blue.
She unfolded it and opened the newspaper, the paper crinkling in her hands.
The newspaper was from just a few years prior by the French daily news press titled Le Petit Journal.
The headline of the day?
“Young Parisian Lawyer Declared Missing.”
