The city had recovered too quickly.

That was what disturbed Dr. Meera the most.

Six months ago:

unexplained violence spread like infection

And now?

Nothing.

No news. No investigations. No public mention of Project Ding Dong.

As if the entire incident had been buried alive.

Rain tapped softly against Meera’s apartment window.

She sat alone at her desk, staring at a thick classified folder.

Most pages were blacked out.

But one sentence remained visible:

“Residual signal activity cannot be ruled out.”

Residual.

The word refused to leave her mind.

A soft vibration interrupted her thoughts.

Her phone lit up.

Unknown number.

No message.

Only audio.

Five seconds long.

Meera hesitated.

Then pressed play.

Silence.

Static.

And then—

Ding… dong.

The phone slipped from her hand.

Her heart slammed painfully against her chest.

No.

No, no, no—

She deleted the file immediately.

But her breathing didn’t slow.

Because the sound hadn’t felt external.

It felt remembered.

Across the city—

Officer Raghav stood inside a crowded metro station.

People moved around him normally.

Talking. Laughing. Scrolling through phones.

But lately…

he noticed things.

Tiny things.

Moments where people stopped walking for half a second.

Moments where expressions vanished suddenly.

Like their minds disconnected briefly.

Then returned.

At the far side of the station—

a man stood completely still.

Watching everyone.

Raghav narrowed his eyes.

Something about him felt familiar.

Too familiar.

The train arrived.

People rushed forward.

For one second—

Raghav lost sight of the man.

Then he saw him again.

Closer now.

Standing directly across the platform.

It was Subject 07.

Older somehow.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

His face looked emptier than ever.

Raghav pushed through the crowd.

“Stop!”

People turned in confusion.

But Subject 07 didn’t run.

Didn’t panic.

He simply watched Raghav approach calmly.

Finally—

Raghav reached him.

“What do you want?” he demanded.

Subject 07 tilted his head slightly.

Then asked something unexpected.

“Do you still hear it?”

Raghav froze.

Silence passed between them.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Then Subject 07 looked around at the moving crowd.

His eyes lingered on dozens of strangers.

People completely unaware.

And quietly—

almost sadly—

he said:

“It spread farther than they expected.”

Raghav grabbed his arm.

“What spread?”

Subject 07 looked directly into his eyes.

And for the first time—

there was fear.

Not for himself.

For everyone else.
