Chapter 6 – Don’t Fall Asleep

ZIP.

ZZZIP.

The sound coming from inside the pink house became louder.

The villagers still stood in their windows, smiling unnaturally in the darkness.

None of them blinked.

None of them moved.

Navya’s nails dug into my arm.

“I hate this place,” she whispered fearfully. “I swear this village is cursed.”

The pale boy stepped backward slowly, his black eyes fixed on the house.

“She is opening the gate wider,” he said.

“What does that mean?” I asked.

Before he could answer—

The front door of the pink house creaked open by itself.

A freezing wind rushed out.

And with it came whispers.

Hundreds of whispers.

Some sounded like crying.

Some sounded angry.

Some sounded like our missing friends.

Navya suddenly froze.

“Did you hear that?” she whispered.

I nodded slowly.

From inside the house, a familiar voice echoed softly:

“Help us…”

It was our friends.

Navya immediately moved toward the entrance.

“They’re alive!”

The pale boy quickly blocked her path.

“No!” he shouted.

“They are not your friends anymore.”

The entire village suddenly went silent.

Even the wind stopped.

Then—

THUD.

Something heavy moved inside the house.

THUD.

Closer.

Navya stepped back toward me, terrified.

A long shadow slowly stretched out from the doorway across the ground.

The whispers became louder.

Then we saw them.

Our friends walked out of the pink house slowly.

But something was horribly wrong.

Their movements looked unnatural, like puppets being pulled by invisible strings.

Their eyes—

Completely black.

Navya covered her mouth in shock.

“No…”

One of them smiled unnaturally wide.

“You should come with us,” she whispered.

Another friend tilted her head strangely.

“The palace misses you.”

I felt my body shaking.

The pale boy whispered urgently:

“Don’t listen to them. She speaks through the trapped ones.”

Suddenly all the villagers stepped out of their houses together.

Dozens of people surrounded us silently.

Every single one had black eyes.

Navya’s breathing became faster.

“We’re surrounded…”

Then one of our friends whispered something that made my blood freeze.

“She enters when you sleep.”

The pale boy looked terrified for the first time.

“She’s stronger tonight,” he said.

“Who?” Navya asked desperately.

But deep inside the pink house—

A girl’s voice answered for him.

“The one who will open every door.”

At that exact moment, all the villagers took one step toward us together.

And suddenly—

I realized something horrifying.
