LOC: House of Blues, San Diego
Lights up. In the House of Blues, halfway through the concert. Christopher, Conner, and Max are performing an epic instrumental piece for their song “One and Eight”. The seats are filled with screaming fans. This is the biggest crowd The Dreaded Miracles have ever performed for. Fifteen-year-old Ella Grace, one of the fans, lifts her hands high over her head.
Ella: Whoo! Go Riley! Keep on rocking!
Down on stage, Riley is standing like a zombie in front of the microphone. He is half-dead and exhausted. His eyes are closed, his head is hung, and his hand is covering his ear. He’s covered in a fountain of sweat, and he is trying to hang on.
Riley: (Singing hoarsely)
Eighteen
Eighteen years
Have passed
Eighteen
And they became
One and Eight
Eighteen
Where do we
Stand now?
`Cause I still
Feel the fear
(He coughs.)
Christopher becomes angry. Riley’s better than this!
Christopher: Riley, what’s the matter with you? You’re better than this!
Riley knows he is, but due to his obsessive-compulsive addiction towards One and Eight and continuous practice, his voice is too badly damaged. He is unable to finish the song. The flashing lights blind him, and when he opens his eyes, his world is spinning. Closing his eyes, he reaches for his head and starts to sway onstage. His throat is on fire, and he coughs over and over again. He cannot stop coughing. Ella jumps up from her seat.
Ella: Riley!
Ella sprints down the stairs, terrified. She wants to help Riley, but will she make it? Onstage, Riley grabs his burning throat and tries to stop coughing, but he can’t. His legs become weak and wobbly, and he turns pale. He can’t do it anymore! His legs slip out from underneath him, and he falls onto his back, eyes closed and teeth clenched together. The microphone escapes his grip and rolls to the edge of the stage. Ella hops onto the stage and kneels to him. Christopher, Conner, and Max drop their instruments.
Christopher, Conner, and Max: Riley, no!
Riley’s world goes black. Lights down.
