A woman on probation, Eden Montgomery, becomes entangled in a violent bank robbery during what she describes as an innocent outing with a friend. Already under suspicion for prior violent offenses and strained by a combative relationship with both her husband and probation officer, she is hospitalized after sustaining a head injury during the incident, while her friend is killed and the situation escalates into a major criminal investigation.
Law enforcement, led by her probation officer Samuel Cubito, begins to suspect that Eden may have been more involved in criminal activity than she admits, including possible responsibility for earlier deaths connected to her husband’s family. Though Eden maintains her innocence regarding those allegations, authorities privately consider her a person of interest and begin building a case while keeping their suspicions hidden to avoid alerting her.
While recovering in the hospital, Eden is placed under constant police supervision. Officers monitor her closely, both for protection and control, while also attempting to gather evidence. An undercover operation is launched in which a supposed therapist provides Eden with a locked journal, intended to encourage her to write freely while investigators covertly access and copy its contents.
Eden, increasingly paranoid and distrustful, believes she is being manipulated and set up for incarceration rather than protected as a victim. Convinced that authorities are lying to her and that she is being targeted, she documents her thoughts and fears in the journal while planning her eventual escape.
As surveillance tightens and tensions rise between Eden and those watching her—particularly Stafford and Cubito—she ultimately escapes custody during a lapse in security, fleeing the hospital. Despite an extensive manhunt involving police and volunteers, she vanishes without a trace, aided by poor conditions and the loss of her scent trail in heavy rain.
Her abandoned journal is recovered and becomes a key piece of the investigation, revealing her paranoia, distrust of law enforcement, and hints of violent past behavior. However, her exact fate remains unknown. Authorities are left divided between believing she died during her escape or successfully disappeared, possibly with outside assistance, while Samuel Cubito remains convinced she is still alive and must eventually be brought to justice.
