Chapter 16: The Island in Dreams

Late at night in the dorm, after the lights died out, the world was left with nothing but heartbeats and breathing. Xiao Qian's sleep was restless. He dreamed of the sea reflecting himself—but it wasn't him.
The youth in the mirror possessed a calm expression, yet undercurrents were hidden deep within his eyes. The waves whispered strange syllables: "O Fallen One, return." The sand beneath his feet shimmered with symbols—the familiar Whispering Scripts. Every sigil glowed like the rhythm of a heartbeat. As he stepped closer to discern the characters, the sand began to collapse. He fell into a boundless deep sea.
The seawater was tender to a morbid degree, as if it were embracing him. A pair of hands reached out from the darkness, lifting him up. "...Don't be afraid." It was an extremely low, steady voice, carrying the chill of the abyss and the warmth of a breath. Xiao Qian looked up and saw that person—he had silver-white hair and skin that was nearly transparent. From his left ear hung an obsidian feather pendant, reflecting the light of the sea with every slight sway. His gaze rested quietly on Xiao Qian, terrifyingly gentle.
"You have finally... returned."
Xiao Qian froze. "Who are you—" The man chuckled softly. The smile was warm, yet it felt like the beginning of a cage. "Don't ask. Names will only make you leave faster." He reached out, his fingertips grazing the side of Xiao Qian's neck. The touch was icy, yet it exuded an irresistible sense of familiarity.
"I have waited too long. They can share your memories, but they will never have you." His tone held no hatred, only a quiet possessiveness. "You don't belong to the land. The wind there, those people... they are all illusions."
Xiao Qian shook his head, taking a step back, but his ankles were entangled by the waves. The force nearly dragged him into the depths. He gasped, "Who exactly are you?"
"I am the Island. I am the Dream. I am the forgotten part of you—the Evil that guards you." As his voice fell, the surrounding water shattered. Countless Whispering Scripts surfaced, swirling around Xiao Qian like prayers: [Only the fallen can wake. Only the dreamer can remember.]
Xiao Qian's heart raced; his chest burned. The necklace beneath his shirt glowed violently—responding to the radiance of the man's earring. The Island Master looked up at the light, his expression near-devotional: "...You still remember." He reached out, as if to pull Xiao Qian into his arms again. But in the next second, the dream collapsed.
Xiao Qian snapped his eyes open, finding himself sitting on his bed, drenched in cold sweat. Outside the window came the sound of tides, yet this was clearly a night in the mountain city. He looked down to see his necklace glowing faintly. At the end of the chain, there was now a silver-white feather—a shape he had never seen before. Outside, the wind stirred the curtains, and a low voice drifted from afar, like the waves: "Don't leave again, Xiao Qian."
