The weekend arrived like a long-awaited save point. For the first time in years, Sataru wasn't spending his Saturday morning staring at hospital invoices or spreadsheets. Instead, he was standing in front of his mirror, nervously adjusting a simple black hoodie and jeans.
No suit. No "Serious Mode" tie. He looked like the shy boy from the convention again.
"Going out, son?" Hiroshi asked, peeking into the hallway while holding a cup of tea. He looked at Sataru’s casual clothes and let out a low whistle. "You look ten years younger. Meeting that 'party member' of yours?"
Sataru turned red, checking his watch. "We’re just... investigating a themed café. Research for her hobbies."
"Right. 'Research,'" Hiroshi chuckled. "Have fun, Sataru. You’ve earned a break from the grind."
The Akihabara district was a sensory overload of neon lights, giant billboards, and J-pop blasting from every corner. Sataru waited by the station exit, feeling out of place until he saw her.
Shino was waving frantically. She was wearing a pleated skirt, an oversized sweater, and her round-rimmed glasses. Tucked under her arm was a limited-edition Sword Art Online tote bag. She looked completely in her element.
"Sataru-kun! You actually came!" she laughed, grabbing his arm. The physical contact sent a jolt through his system, but for once, he didn't pull away.
"I promised, didn't I?" he said, his voice softer than it ever was in the office.
They made their way to a hidden gem—a café themed after "Fantasy Questing." The interior looked like a medieval tavern, complete with wooden booths and "potions" served in glass flasks.
"Look!" Shino pointed at the menu. "They have a 'Shield Hero Omelet Rice.' It says it has 'High Defense' stats. You have to order it!"
Sataru couldn't help but smile. Seeing her this happy, away from the pressure of being the "Office Idol," made his heart ache with a strange, protective warmth. "Only if you get the 'Sniper’s Parfait' for dessert."
They spent the next hour lost in conversation. They didn't talk about Q3 projections or the Director’s temper. They talked about the first time Shino cried over a character's death, and how Sataru’s dad used to tell him stories about real-life heroes when he was little.
"I feel like I can breathe when I'm with you," Shino said, stirring her blue "Mana Potion" soda. "At work, I have to be the girl everyone wants. Here... I'm just the girl who likes dogs and light novels."
Sataru reached across the table, his fingers brushing hers. "I like both versions. But I think I like this one a little more."
Shino’s face turned pink, but before she could respond, a familiar, high-pitched voice cut through the tavern music.
"Wait... is that Madsudori-san?!"
Sataru and Shino both froze, their "Serious Mode" instincts kicking in simultaneously. Turning slowly, they saw three girls from the Marketing department—the "Office Gossip Trio"—standing by the entrance, holding shopping bags.
"And... ASADA-KUN?!" the second girl gasped, her eyes nearly popping out of her head. "The 'Serious Ace' is at an anime café? In a hoodie?!"
The "Secret Date" was suddenly a "Public Crisis."
Sataru felt the old shyness rising like a tide. His first instinct was to stand up, apologize, and retreat. But then he felt Shino’s hand grip his firmly under the table.
She wasn't hiding. She wasn't taking off her glasses.
"Oh, hey girls!" Shino said, her voice dropping the "Idol" sweetness for a tone that was cool and confident. "Small world, right? Sataru and I were just finishing up. He’s helping me hunt for some rare merchandise."
"Sataru?" one of the girls whispered, giggling. "First names? Since when are you two on a first-name basis?"
Sataru looked at Shino. He saw the way she was holding his hand, showing him that she wasn't ashamed to be seen with the "boring" guy from the cubicle next door.
He took a deep breath. The "pay wall" wasn't just about money; it was about the walls he built around himself.
"Since we realized we have the same interests," Sataru said, standing up and looking the coworkers in the eye. He didn't look shy. He looked like a man standing his ground. "If you’ll excuse us, we have a few more shops to visit before the 'server' closes for the night."
He gently took Shino’s bag, slung it over his shoulder, and led her toward the exit. The Marketing girls stood there in stunned silence, watching the most serious man in the company walk out of an anime café hand-in-hand with the office beauty.
Once they were safely around the corner, Shino burst into laughter, leaning against a lamp post for support.
"Sataru! 'Before the server closes'?! You’ve been reading my books, haven't you?"
Sataru rubbed the back of his neck, his face glowing red. "Maybe a few chapters. I had to understand the 'meta' of our relationship."
Shino stepped closer, her glasses slightly fogged up from her laughter. She reached up and kissed him lightly on the cheek.
"Your 'Charm' stat just went up by a hundred points, Hero."79Please respect copyright.PENANAGqOTnoWWWW
