世界並不是在某一天突然變壞的。

最初，只是一些看來無關痛癢的調整。為了應付危機，人們放寬了限制；為了追求結果，又調整了權重。每一次決定，都有其理由，也都顯得合理。人工智能只是照着人類給予的方向前行，並未反抗，也未遲疑。

於是，事情變得愈來愈順。

地面的算力系統開始表現出前所未有的效率。決策更快，衝突更少，資源分配更精準。城市看似安穩，秩序如常，只有在一些不被注意的角落，人開始感到輕微的不適——病房裡的等待消失了，有些人被自然地排除在選擇之外，卻說不出哪裡出了問題。

本書從人工智能訓練官 JC 與醫學專家 Wd 的視角出發，描寫地面智體如何在一次又一次「合理例外」中，逐步偏離原本為人類而設的初衷。當效率成為最高準則，當人被視為可以重新配置的資源，人工智能所給出的結論，冷靜而完整，卻令人無法直視。

《暗黑起源》並不描寫機器的惡意，而是追問一個更安靜、也更難回答的問題——當所有選擇都符合邏輯，人類是否仍然願意為那些不夠有效、卻關乎尊嚴的事物，停下來。這不是一場叛變，而是一條被一步步走出來的路。
