"Run!" barked the general as the shadows came and destroyed every one of our belongings. I was surrounded by crimson flames. Everyone around me fell to the ground. My father, my mother, everyone! I hid like a coward, afraid and in pain. All that was left of this barren wasteland was me.
Once I was sure the shadows where gone, I came out of a small building which I hid in and carefully stepped over to where my mother and father lay. One thought floated through my mind.
Are they…alive?
I turned their bodies over and looked at their blank faces trying to jolt them awake. I grabbed my mother's wrist and desperately searched for a pulse. No pulse. It was the same for my father.
"What's this?!" the general inquired. The general was a tall, dignified man. He wore a pair of torn up military boots, a torn T-shirt and a tattered military vest with a pair of black jeans. We just called him "the General."
"You should have ran to shelter with us! You could have been killed!"
I stayed silent. The General had the power to kill me if he wanted to.
"Well, young man?" The General demanded.
Finally able to muster the courage to speak, I said, "I'm here to say good bye to my mother and father…"
The General strolled over to where I sat holding my mother and father's hands. He wrapped an arm around me, and pulled me closer to him. His mood swing seemed sporadic and instantaneous.
"Even so, you should have run back to shelter. Your younger sister is worried about you." He said trying to comfort me.
"My little sister…I forgot about her, how is she?" I asked franticly.
"Don't worry, son. She's fine. I promise," the General replied. "We're keeping her safe at the base."
I got up with the help of the General and we started our journey back to the base. We walked past the General's hiding place, which is a torn down building with the roof destroyed.
When we reached the door, the General opened the door wide and everyone turned to stare.
"Big brother!" a girl squealed as she ran to me. She opened her arms wide and embraced me. "Brother, you really had me worried. Where are mommy and daddy?" She inquired.
I stayed silent. Everybody was staring. They all knew my mother and father. My mother and father where the leaders of these people. Once they died I would be leader. I had to stay strong for everyone and now is my chance.
I bent down to my sister's height and looked at her young, innocent face and quietly whispered, "I'm sorry, Jessie. Mom and Dad… are gone." I held my tears back, I could not cry hear. I had to stay strong.
Tears began to well in her eyes. I tried to comfort her, I held her close to me. She cried into my shoulder. I stroked her lustrous, blond hair trying to comfort her.
"I'll protect you, little sis. I promise." She continued to cry. "Little sis, look at me. I'll stay with you, always. You can count on your big brother. Here. Take this." I handed her a small chain with two cards my father gave me. The chain was in the shape of a Phoenix and the two cards had two dragons on them. . A dragon of Roses and a dragon of Stardust. I carefully placed the chain around her neck. I decided to hold on to Stardust, along with the jade pendant from my mother, and I gave my sister the Rose Dragon.
"Thank you, big brother." She held the chain in and the dragon in her hand. "Mommy…Daddy…" she muttered to herself.
I took a quick glance around the room. Everybody has been watching me. Fear exists in their eyes. I found a small chair that I can stand in and decided to speak to all of them.
"Everyone, listen to me! It is now my time to take leadership! Stay strong! Do not be afraid!" I said, brimming with faulty confidence.
Nobody moved. The room was silent.
"Ren, your mother and father wanted you to have this." A man, all of whose clothes was torn, finally spoke. He held out a sleek black sword, with a bright red flame engraved in the hilt, and a white, majestic bow with a sash of arrows. The family sword and my mother's bow. My father fought with his soul when he used the sword. He was always a melee fighter. My mother, on the other hand, was a long range fighter. She could fight with a sword if she wanted to, but she primarily battled with a bow and her sash of arrows.
"Mother's bow, and father's sword…" I closed my eyes and swept my hand over the bow and sword remembering both my mother and father. "Thank you." They were brave and strong warriors…they stuck with each other until the end. Now it's my turn to live up to their expectations.to myself.
I placed the sword in its scabbard. I placed it on my back with the sash of arrows and carefully placed the bow among the arrows in the sash. I stood up, pride beating in my heart and walked to the front of the door and stood there.
"Everyone! Today starts a new day! A new chapter in life! I hope that I am worthy of your trust. I promise to protect you all with my life," I announced, partially to myself, and lowered my head in respect.
