"Seriously!" Eilara grumbled, though a smirk tugged at her lips. "How do you know all that?"
"Magic," Lina grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Eilara crawled under the covers, her mind drifting back to the first day of school. She remembered the wish she’d made then—a moment of pure, proud ambition. But two months had passed, and everything felt like a disaster. She felt a wave of sadness wash over her; the world was heavier than she’d expected. I just need the rest to continue, she whispered to the darkness. She turned over and finally let sleep take her.
A violent crash shattered the silence of the night.
Before Eilara could scream, a figure lunged, tackling her with enough force to throw her against the cold stone wall. Anger flared white-hot in her chest as a blade pressed against her neck. A heavy hand pinned her down, but Eilara wasn't a victim anymore. With a surge of pride in her training, she wrenched her hand free to grip the flat of the sword, pushing back against the steel.
"What do you want?" she hissed, her voice trembling with rage.
"Answers," the figure replied. The voice was soft and sweet, but it sent an eerie chill down Eilara’s spine. It was a voice she once loved.
"I also want answers!" Eilara cried, her heart breaking even as she fought. "Let go of me!"
Eilara squeezed her eyes shut and reached for the air around her. She shaped the wind into a jagged spear and launched it at the figure’s head. The attacker gasped, letting go to catch the hood of her velvet cape as it was blown back.
"Try all of that again," Eilara taunted, fueled by a desperate, angry energy. "I'll get a stronger blast."
She reached deep into her center, calling for a hurricane. When she released the power, the wind roared through the small room, throwing the figure backward. As the dust settled, the attacker’s cloak fell away, revealing a pair of familiar turquoise eyes.
Eilara froze. Those eyes were a storm of fire and ice, love and hate, pride and guilt. They belonged to a face she knew better than her own, yet the raw emotion made her look like a complete stranger. The girl jumped again, pinning Eilara’s hands and leveling the weapon at her throat once more.
"I want answers," she hissed.
The sadness was so thick Eilara could taste it. Her throat tightened, and the world seemed to tilt on its axis.
