The morning air in the village of Brook-Haven was sweet with the smell of clover and wet earth. Jessica stood at the edge of the town square, adjusting her spectacles and clutching a very organized-looking clipboard.
"Alright, girls," Jessica said, trying to sound like a seasoned Guild Master. "This is a Grade-C cleanup quest. The local watermill is infested with Azure Slimes. They aren't dangerous, but they are very sticky and they're clogging the grain chutes. No magic without my permission, and no chaos."
Silica and Marley exchanged a look behind Jessica's back. They were wearing matching light leather armor that Robert and Marin had bought for them. Silica had a small shortsword at her hip, and Marley carried a satchel full of "experimental" powder vials she'd nicked from Malric's lab.
"No chaos! We promise!" Silica said, her amber eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Scout's honor!" Marley added, hiding a vial of Extra-Strength Bubbling Agent behind her cloak.
The Mill of Goop
As they reached the old wooden mill, the problem became clear. The waterwheel was covered in a thick, glowing blue jelly. Dozens of Azure Slimes were bouncing around the docks, making a rhythmic splat-squish sound.
"Ugh, it looks like the world's biggest bowl of melted candy," Silica noted, poking a slime with the tip of her scabbard. The slime wobbled and let out a tiny, high-pitched mew.
"Stay back, girls," Jessica warned, raising her staff. "I'll use a mild dehydration spell to-"
SPLAT.
A slime jumped from the rafters, landing directly on top of Jessica's head. The "Azure Goop" slid down her face, pinning her glasses to her nose.
"Oh no! The supervisor is compromised!" Marley shouted, but she couldn't hide her giggle.
The Bonding Battle
Jessica spent the next ten minutes trying to peel herself out of the jelly, leaving Silica and Marley to handle the front line.
"Okay, Silica, you draw their attention with the sword-flips, and I'll use the 'Secret Sauce'!" Marley whispered.
Silica lunged forward. She wasn't a trained knight yet, but she had the Atten speed. She danced around the slimes, her laughter echoing through the mill. Every time a slime tried to pounce, she'd sidestep, leading them into a cluster.
"Now, Marley!"
Marley threw a vial of white powder into the center of the slime pile. POOF. Instead of exploding, the powder turned the slimes into giant, bouncy bubbles. Within seconds, the mill was filled with floating, iridescent spheres.
"Look!" Silica cried, jumping onto one of the bubbles. It didn't pop; it just drifted upward. "We're flying!"
A Quiet Moment in the Rafters
After the "battle" turned into a game of bubble-tag, the three of them sat on the high rafters of the mill, watching the bubbles drift out the window and pop over the river. Jessica had finally cleaned her glasses, though her hair was still a bit blue.
"You two actually work really well together," Jessica noted, leaning back against a wooden beam. "Robert and Marin were worried you'd be too different, but you're like two sides of the same coin."
Silica looked at Marley. For a moment, the playful light in her eyes faded, replaced by the shadow of her past. "I never had a friend," Silica whispered. "When I was being moved from house to house... I was always alone. Having Marley... it feels like having a sister I got to choose."
Marley reached over and grabbed Silica's hand, her usual chatter stopping for a second. "I was just a village girl until Malric found me. I thought the world was just chores and dirt. But with you, Silica... every day is an adventure. Even the sticky ones."
Silica leaned her head on Marley's shoulder. "We're the 'Chaos Sisters,' right?"
"The best in the Kingdom," Marley agreed.
The Reward
Jessica smiled, checking off the 'Quest Complete' box on her clipboard. "Well, 'Sisters,' the mill is clean, the slimes are bubbles, and I think I found a stray Azure Slime in my boot. I'd say that's a successful mission."
As they walked back to the Montclair estate, covered in blue glitter and smelling like sugar, Jessica felt a pang of warmth. She realized that while Marin and Robert were the "Power Couple," these two were the heart of the new family they were building.
The Return
When they arrived back at the villa, Robert and Marin were waiting at the gate.
"How was the mission?" Robert asked, trying to keep a straight face as he saw the blue goo in Jessica's hair.
"It was... educational," Jessica sighed.
"We saved the world from the Great Jelly Menace!" Marley announced, striking a hero's pose.
Silica ran to Robert, hugging him tightly. "And we didn't even need the Shadow Knight to help us."
Robert laughed, ruffling her hair. "I never doubted you for a second."
