The landscape of the South was a sharp departure from the jagged, ash-stained Cinder Peaks. Here, the air was humid and smelled of salt and blooming jasmine. Shinkawa was a town built on the edge of a sparkling turquoise bay, famous for its intricate canals and white-stone architecture.
As Rika’s wagon rumbled down the cobblestone road, she caught sight of two familiar figures trailing a few dozen paces behind: a blonde woman with glowing silver eyes and a knight in polished plate armor.
"You two are about as subtle as a dragon in a library," Rika called out, pulling the reins. She looked back at Elara and Kaelan with a tired but grateful smile. "I knew you wouldn't just let me walk off into the sunset alone."
"We had some 'business' in the South," Kaelan said, though his hand resting on his sword hilt suggested that "business" involved any threat to their friend.
"And I wasn't finished teaching you how to properly channel that Null-Aether," Elara added, stepping up to the wagon.
Rika laughed, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Well, if you're going to follow me, you might as well ride with me. I’m going to need the moral support. My parents... they aren't going to make this easy."
The Ghost of Robert
As they rode toward the heart of the town, Rika stared at the passing shops. She pointed toward a small, ivy-covered bridge near the town square.
"That bridge," Rika said quietly. "That’s where it happened. When we were three years old, a stray monster—a Shadow-Stalker—broke through the town’s old wards. It cornered me and Mark. We were just kids... we didn't know how to fight."
Elara watched Rika’s hands tighten on the reins until her knuckles turned white.
"Our friend Robert... he was only four," Rika continued, her voice trembling. "He didn't have any magic, but he grabbed a gardener's rake and distracted the thing so we could run. He saved us. But he didn't make it."
Kaelan lowered his head in a silent salute to a fallen warrior, no matter how young.
"Mark took it the hardest," Rika whispered. "He’s lived every day since then trying to be 'enough' to make up for Robert being gone. He thinks he owes Robert his life. And I... I think I spent years looking for Robert in every person I met, until I realized the person who was actually there for me was always Mark. But we don't talk about it. The grief is like a wall between us."
She looked up at the towering manor house overlooking the bay. "And now my parents want to tear that wall down and replace it with a fortress of political contracts."
The Cold Welcome
When they arrived at the Shinkawa Estate, the atmosphere felt brittle. The servants moved with a strange, synchronized stiffness. Rika led Elara and Kaelan into the grand hall, where her parents, Lord and Lady Valerius, sat at a long obsidian table.
"Rika," her father said. He didn't stand. His eyes were wide and fixed, his voice echoing with a hollow, metallic ring. "You have returned just in time. The preparations for your union with Lord Draven’s son are nearly complete."
"Father, I told you in my letters, I killed a Level 92 Calamity!" Rika argued, stepping forward. "I have my own status now! I don't need this marriage!"
Her mother tilted her head in an unnatural, bird-like motion. "The status of a daughter is to serve the house. Lord Draven has shown us the truth. The town must be unified. You will marry his son on the coming Sabbath."
Elara’s silver eyes narrowed. She leaned toward Kaelan, her voice a low hiss. "Kaelan... look at their shadows. They aren't moving with them. This isn't just stubbornness. Someone has their minds in a vice."
Rika looked back at her friends, her face pale. "Mother? Father? Please, just listen to me..."
But her parents weren't listening. Standing in the shadows behind them was a tall, slender man with a cruel smile and a sapphire pendant that pulsed with a rhythmic, sickly light.
"Welcome home, Lady Rika," the Noble purred. "I hope you brought your traveling companions to witness your most glorious day. It would be a shame if they missed the ceremony."
