The morning after the Gala, the Varis Estate was not filled with the smell of breakfast, but the metallic tang of unsheathed steel. Lord Vane hadn't come alone this time. He had brought the Royal Aether-Inquisitors—men in white and gold armor whose job was to ensure every "Wild Power" was properly Bonded and taxed.
"By order of the High Council," the lead Inquisitor announced, his voice booming through the foyer. "Elara: Rank Pending, is to be taken into custody for 'Aether-Anomalies.' She has been sighted manipulating Bond-energy without a Mark. This is a violation of the Natural Order."
Kaelan stood at the top of the stairs, dressed not in his Noble silks, but in his old, scarred traveling leather. He carried two packs and his heavy claymore. Beside him, Elara looked bored, her silver hair tied back with a simple cord.
"She’s not going anywhere with you," Kaelan said.
"Kaelan, stop this!" Duke Alaric shouted from the balcony above. "If she leaves now, she is a fugitive! If you go with her, you lose your title! Your Level 65 status will be considered 'Stolen Power'!"
Kaelan looked at Elara. He saw the woman who had pulled him from the dirt of the forest. Then he looked at his father, who saw her as a battery.
"I’m a Knight," Kaelan said, his voice steady. "My job is to protect people from monsters. And right now, the monsters are wearing crowns."
He looked at Elara and nodded.
"Time to go?" she asked.
"Time to go."
The Inquisitors lunged. They weren't just soldiers; they were Level 50 specialized "Binders." They threw glowing Aether-nets designed to latch onto a target's core and force a temporary Bond state.
Elara didn't even draw a weapon. She stepped forward, and her Null-Aether erupted in a localized pulse. It didn't push the men back—it erased the magic in their nets. The glowing gold threads simply turned into wet hemp and fell to the floor.
"How... how can she nullify a Royal Bind?" the Inquisitor gasped.
"Because I didn't get my power from a ceremony," Elara said, moving like a silver blur.
She moved through the ranks of the Inquisitors, using the flat of her hand to strike their pressure points. She wasn't killing them—she was "unplugging" them. Every man she touched felt their Aether go cold for a split second, long enough for them to collapse in a heap.
Kaelan followed her lead, using the pommel of his sword to knock back those who tried to circle around. They moved in perfect synergy, a Level 87 Void and a Level 65 Sun.
Within minutes, the foyer of the Varis Estate was filled with groaning, unconscious men.
"Wait!" Lord Vane shouted, his violet eyes flashing with desperate greed. "Elara! If you leave, you’ll be hunted in every city! But if you stay with me, I can hide you. I can give you everything!"
Elara paused at the front door. She looked back at the man who thought everything had a price. "You don't get it, Vane. You think the Bond is power. I think the Bond is a crutch."
She looked at Kaelan. "Ready for the road?"
"I've been ready for four years," he replied.
They stepped out into the morning sun, leaving the High District behind. They weren't just leaving a house; they were leaving the system.
The Road to the Next City
By midday, they were miles away from Oakhaven, walking the trade routes that led toward the Iron-Peak Guild-City.
"You know," Kaelan said, adjusted his pack. "As soon as we enter the next city, we’ll have to register at an Adventurer's Guild. They don't care about Noble titles, but they do care about Levels. A Level 87 and a Level 65 showing up together... people are going to notice."
"Let them notice," Elara said, looking at the wide-open horizon. "In the forest, I had to hide to survive. Now? I want the monsters to know I'm coming. Maybe if we clear enough dungeons, the King will be too afraid to send his 'Inquisitors' after us."
Kaelan laughed, a genuine, free sound. "An 'S-Rank' duo of outcasts. We’re going to be a nightmare for the history books."
He reached out and took her hand. There was no flash of light this time, no drug-induced urge. Just the simple, warm touch of two people who had chosen to walk the same path.
"I still owe you," Kaelan whispered.
"You're paying it back every mile we walk," Elara replied.
Ahead of them, the mountains of the next province rose into the sky, filled with ancient ruins, Level 90 Bosses, and the secrets of the world before the Bond Laws existed. The Legend of the Null-Sovereign and her Sun-Knight had officially begun.
