[Victoria’s Thought]: I’ve fought biological monsters, sentient machines, and even a goddess of the multiverse. But this? This feels different. In Sherwood, I’m a symbol of hope. Here? In the shadows of these gargoyles? I feel like a trespasser.
Batgirl didn't wait for a formal introduction. She blurred forward, moving with a grounded, predatory grace that Victoria had never seen in a UMA. A volley of three Batarangs hissed through the rain.
Victoria raised her left arm, her Transparent Green Shield manifesting in a flicker of light.
CLANG. CLANG. CLINK.
The blades bounced off the energy barrier, but Victoria felt the impact hum through her bones. These weren't just toys; they were weighted, precision-engineered weapons.
"Wait! I'm on your side!" Victoria shouted, her thrusters kicking in to put distance between them. She hovered six feet off the ground, her violet armor glowing defiantly against the Gotham grime.
"Funny," Batgirl countered, already mid-air, her cape snapping like a whip. "The ones on my side usually don't drop out of the sky and start glowing like a neon sign."
[Batgirl’s Thought]: She’s hovering. Actual flight tech, not just gliders. And that energy... it’s not electrical. It’s resonant. I need to see if I can short it out before she decides to level the block.
Batgirl landed on the side of a fire escape and used the momentum to launch herself at Victoria. She pulled a Pellet Grenade from her belt and slammed it against Victoria’s chest plate.
BOOM.
A thick, grey cloud of smoke and metallic filings erupted.
"Ugh! Is this... smoke?" Victoria coughed, her sensors going haywire. "Watch, clear the HUD!"
[Victoria’s Thought]: She’s not trying to kill me. She’s trying to blind me. She’s a tactical fighter. Okay, Victoria. If she wants a game of hide-and-seek, let’s show her how Sherwood plays.
Victoria dived through the smoke, her green cape trailing like a comet. She didn't strike Batgirl; instead, she used her speed to circle her, creating a Vortex of Starlight. The air around the rooftop began to glow, the violet energy hum growing into a high-pitched whine.
"Stop!" Victoria commanded. "I was chasing a man in a top hat! He had a girl!"
"Jervis Tetch," Batgirl said, her voice strained as she fought against the wind pressure Victoria was creating. "He’s my collar. And he’s been using stolen tech to bridge dimensions. You’re the 'variable' he’s been babbling about in his transmissions."
Batgirl reached into a hidden compartment on her gauntlet. She fired a Grapnel Hook, but not at Victoria. She fired it at a nearby water tower. As she swung, she tossed a specialized Sonic Disruptor into the center of Victoria’s vortex.
SKREEEEEEEEE—
The sound tore through Victoria’s helmet. The Cybergem inside her watch reacted violently to the frequency, the green armor flickering and turning a jagged, angry violet.
"Ah! Stop it! The Watch—it's overloading!" Victoria tumbled from the air, her flight stabilization failing. She crashed onto the roof of a neighboring tenement, rolling across the gravel until she hit the brick ledge.
Batgirl landed softly a few feet away, a Batarang already in hand. But she hesitated. Victoria’s mask had glitched open, revealing the face of a teenage girl with messy dark hair and eyes filled with tears from the sonic feedback.
"You're... just a kid," Batgirl whispered, her cowl tilting in surprise.
Victoria looked up, clutching her arm. "I'm sixteen. And I'm a hero where I come from. My name is Victoria Vega. I didn't ask to come to this dump of a city."
[Batgirl’s Thought]: Sixteen. Same age I was when I first put on the suit. The tech is advanced, but the girl? She’s terrified. And that energy signal... it’s almost like a heartbeat.
Before Batgirl could put her weapon away, the roof beneath them groaned. The brickwork began to shift, turning into a nightmarish, oversized rose garden. Stems as thick as pythons erupted from the ventilation ducts, covered in thorns that glowed with a sickly green light.
"Late! Late! For a very important date!"
The Mad Hatter stood on the rooftop of the toy factory across the street, holding a glowing Cybergem Shard—a jagged, cracked piece of Victoria’s world. Behind him stood a man in a flight suit covered in glowing orange tubes: Firefly.
"The Queen of Hearts wants her starlight!" Hatter screamed, pointing his cane. "Burn them, my firefly! Burn the intruders to a crisp!"
Firefly roared, his flamethrower ignited with a chemical, green-tinted fire. "New target? New toy? Let's see how fast she melts!"
Batgirl stepped in front of the injured Victoria, her cape spreading wide. "Change of plans, Vega. You want to prove you're a hero? Get up. We've got a bridge to burn."
Victoria gritted her teeth, the green light returning to her eyes as the Watch synced with her resolve. "I thought you'd never ask."
