Hana’s heart felt like a drum as she led Ren up the stairs of her quiet house. Her parents were out for the evening, leaving the hallway bathed in the soft, golden light of the setting sun.
"My room is... a lot," she whispered, her hand trembling on the doorknob. "You don't have to pretend it’s normal. I know it’s not what people expect when they see a 'quiet bookworm.'"
Ren followed her, his large frame making the narrow hallway feel even smaller. "Hana, I literally have a Kirito figure holding a 'Best Point Guard' trophy like a sword. I am the last person who will judge you."
Hana took a breath and pushed the door open.
The room was a different world. It was a sea of cool blues and greys. One entire wall was covered in high-quality posters of Sword Art Online, specifically the GGO arc. On her desk, next to her stacks of high-ranking textbooks, sat a pristine glass display case. Inside was a 1/7 scale figure of Sinon in her sniper gear, her scarf billowing in an invisible wind.
Pinned to the corkboard were her own sketches—art of Shino Asada and Sinon, drawn with such precision that they looked like official concept art.
Ren stepped inside, his jaw actually dropping. He didn't look overwhelmed; he looked like he had just walked into a treasure vault.
"Whoa," he breathed, walking over to the display case. He leaned in, his eyes wide. "Is this the limited edition GGO figure? The one from the 2024 anniversary run? I tried to pre-order this, but it sold out in four seconds!"

Ren turned away from the figure to look at Hana. He didn't look at the posters or the merch anymore; he looked at her. "You really are like her, aren't you? Shino Asada."
"I wish," Hana muttered, looking at her shoes. "She can face her past. I just hide from mine."
"You're not hiding right now," Ren pointed out softly. He sat on her bed, looking at the mountain of plushies and books. "You let me in here. That’s a pretty big 'boss fight' move, Hana."
Hana sat down on her desk chair, spinning it slightly. "It’s the first time anyone besides my mom has seen this room. I usually keep the door locked when people visit."
Ren reached into his backpack and pulled out his own phone. "Then I should show you my 'hidden inventory' too."
He opened an app—a secret photo vault. Inside were hundreds of photos of his own collection back home, but also something else: photos of his sketches. They weren't as good as Hana’s, but they were full of heart—mostly doodles of swords and armor.
"I draw during the halftime breaks," Ren admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "The coach thinks I'm drawing plays. I'm actually trying to figure out how to draw Kirito’s Dual Blades."
They both laughed—a soft, shared sound that filled the blue room. For the next hour, the "Basketball Star" and the "Invisible Girl" vanished. There was only Ren and Hana, comparing notes on their favorite episodes and discussing the trauma of the "Phantom Bullet" arc.
"Hana," Ren said suddenly, his expression turning serious. He reached out and picked up a small, hand-drawn sketch she had made of Sinon looking through her scope. "The school festival is next week. Chloe and the committee want me to lead the 'Royal Court' parade."
Hana felt the familiar cold prickle of anxiety. "You should do it. It’s what everyone expects."
"I don't want to do what they expect," Ren said, standing up and walking toward her. He stopped just a few inches away. "I want to go to the festival with someone who actually knows who I am. I want to go with you."
Hana’s breath caught. "Ren... people will stare. Chloe will... she'll make it impossible for me. I can't be 'visible' like that. I'm a sniper, remember? I stay in the shadows."
Ren reached out, his hand gently catching hers. He didn't squeeze; he just held it, warm and steady.
"A sniper needs a spotter, Hana. Someone to watch their back while they take the shot." He smiled, that small, private smile that was only for her. "Let me be your spotter. Just for one day? We don't have to be 'The Prince' and 'The Ghost.' We can just be two nerds at a festival."
Hana looked at their joined hands, then up at the Sinon figure on her desk. She thought about the "Out of the Shadows" title they both loved.
"Okay," she whispered, her heart racing. "But if I panic and hide in a trash can, you have to pretend you don't know me."
Ren laughed, a bright, clear sound. "Deal. But I highly doubt you'll need a trash can. You've got the Sniper's Heart, Hana. You just haven't realized it yet."
