Chapter XXVIII: The Purple Bull, Part 1
During lunch break at school, Saki is sitting at her usual spot in the cafeteria, nervously poking at her food. Hageshi, with his usual mischievous grin, sidles up to her, his eyes twinkling with a challenge.
Hageshi: "Hey, Saki, I dare you to pat Ryujin's head. He's sitting right next to you."
Saki's heart skips a beat. She looks at Ryujin, who is engrossed in his lunch, completely oblivious to the conversation happening next to him. Her mind races with anxiety.
Saki: "I... I don't know, Hageshi. Maybe next week or something?"
Before Hageshi could press further, Ryujin enters the room with his lunch tray, looking for a place to sit. He spots Saki and made his way over, sitting down beside her. He smiles warmly, his presence comforting yet intimidating in her current state of nerves.
Ryujin: "Hey, Saki. How's your day going?"
Saki: "It's going fine, Ryujin. Just... you know, usual stuff."
Ryujin: "Cool. Mind if I sit here?"
Saki: "Not at all."
As Ryujin begins eating, Saki feels Hageshi's eyes boring into her from across the room. She glances up and sees him giving her an exaggerated thumbs-up and mouthing the words.
Hageshi (mouthing the words and making the gesture): "Just do it! Don't let your dreams be dreams. Yesterday, you said tomorrow. So just do it."
Saki (in her mind): "Man, really with the Shia meme? Fine, but sometimes, people will misunderstood that kind of gesture in the future. Who knows, maybe the next generation will be balancing numbers, or even creating memes that will haunt children."
Ryujin notices her distracted look and turns to see what she was staring at. When he sees Hageshi's gesture, he raises an eyebrow in confusion.
Ryujin: "Is something going on, Saki?"
Saki's mind is screaming. She is caught in a whirlwind of panic, unable to muster the courage to act on Hageshi's dare. The pressure is too much. She abruptly stands up.
Saki: "I... I need to go to the toilet!"
She rushes out of the cafeteria, leaving Ryujin looking bewildered.
Ryujin: "Man, what was that all about?"
Haruto and Hageshi, noticing the commotion, called Ryujin over to join them for some games after he finishes his lunch. Ryujin, still puzzled by Saki's sudden departure, shrugs and decides to join them.
Meanwhile, in the bathroom, Saki is standing in front of the mirror, her hands shaking. She takes deep breaths, trying to calm herself down. The door opens, and Kitsune walks in, immediately noticing Saki's distress.
Kitsune: "Hey, Saki, are you okay? You look really upset."
Saki: "It's nothing. Just... something Hageshi dared me to do."
Kitsune: "Hageshi's dares? Those can be pretty intense. What did he make you do?"
Saki hesitates, then decided to confide in her friend.
Saki: "He dared me to pat Ryujin's head. It sounds silly, but I just couldn't do it. I panicked."
Kitsune: "Oh, Saki-chan, that's not silly at all. It's understandable to feel nervous. Ryujin can be a bit intimidating, but he's also really kind. Maybe you just need a bit more time."
Saki: "I know. I just wish I was braver."
Kitsune: "You are brave, Saki. It's okay to take things at your own pace. Don't let Hageshi's dares push you into something you're not ready for."
Saki feels a wave of relief wash over her. Kitsune's words are reassuring, and she feels a bit more grounded. She nods, feeling a little better.
Saki: "Thanks, Kitsune. I really needed that."
Kitsune: "Anytime, Saki-chan. Just remember, we're all here for you."
Back in the cafeteria, Ryujin finishes his lunch and joins Haruto and Hageshi for their game. He couldn't shake the feeling that something is off with Saki.
Ryujin: "So, what game are we playing?"
Haruto: "We're thinking of a strategy game. Something to get our minds working."
Ryujin: "Sounds good to me. Let's do it."
As they play, Ryujin's thoughts keep drifting back to Saki. He wonders if she was okay and what could have caused her sudden departure. Hageshi, noticing Ryujin's distraction, nudges him.
Hageshi: "Hey, Ryujin, everything alright?"
Ryujin: "Yeah, just thinking about Saki. She seemed really upset earlier."
Hageshi: "Don't worry about it. She'll be fine. Probably just a bit of lunch break drama."
Ryujin: "I hope so."
Meanwhile, Saki and Kitsune returns to the cafeteria, Saki feeling more composed. She decides to approach Ryujin, even if it isn't to fulfill Hageshi's dare, but to at least talk to him and clear the air.
Saki: "Ryujin, can I talk to you for a second?"
Ryujin: "Sure, Saki. What's up?"
Saki takes a deep breath, her heart pounding.
Saki: "I'm sorry for rushing out like that. I just felt overwhelmed. Hageshi dared me to pat your head, and I panicked."
Ryujin looks surprised but smiled warmly.
Ryujin: "It's okay, Saki. No need to feel bad about it. Hageshi's dares can be pretty intense."
Saki: "Thanks for understanding, Ryujin. I'm just not good with dares."
Ryujin: "No worries. We can just forget about it."
Saki smiles, feeling a sense of relief. She has faced her fear and talked to Ryujin, even if it isn't exactly what Hageshi had dared her to do. It is a step forward, and that was enough for her.
As the lunch break ends, the students return to their classes. Saki feels a sense of accomplishment. She knows she has a long way to go in overcoming her anxieties, but with friends like Kitsune and Ryujin, she feels more confident in taking small steps towards bravery.
That afternoon, during a break between classes, Hageshi approaches Saki, a playful grin on his face.
Hageshi: "So, did you do it?"
Saki: "No, but I talked to Ryujin and told him about the dare. That's enough for now."
Hageshi: "Hey, that's progress! Good job, Saki."
Saki: "Thanks, Hageshi. I'll get there eventually."
Hageshi: "I know you will. And when you do, it'll be epic."
The day ends on a positive note. Saki feels a renewed sense of confidence, and she is determined to keep pushing her boundaries, one step at a time. With her friends by her side, she knows she could face any challenge that came her way.
