故事發生在20世紀九十年代中期的英國倫敦。

年紀30出頭的單身母親憶摩，在倫敦某大學攻讀博士學位，忽然接到父親從北京打來的電話，得知留在國內的兒子笑笑得了癌症。憶摩不顧同居數年的男友李方，与他分手，甚至決定中斷學業，立刻回國。就在她即將踏上歸程時，一個電話改變了命運：為了兒子笑笑的安危與前途，她必須留在英國。憶摩到處打工，掙錢寄回家；在異國男子中周旋，尋找愛情與歸宿。
