"I'm sorry..." Crizelda mutters embarrassed by her own actions, as the teacher continues writing on the board...
A few minutes later the bell rang signaling the end of first period in the afternoon, the teacher dismissed everyone as he exits class, Crizelda's classmates dispersed out of class. Crizelda cleans her things when a hand lands on her shoulder making her jump in fear, she looks behind her, it was Jane, worried as she retreats her hand from Crizelda's shoulder as if one touch of hers could burn her.
"Crizzy?" Jane said.
"Yeah?" Crizelda replied looking up at Jane noting her worrisome eyes comparing them to the ones she saw in her dream(?) "Are you alright? You seem like you were having a nightmare, earlier" Jane replied sitting on a chair next to Crizelda's desk, placing her hand over Crizelda's. "Do you want to talk about it?" Jane asked worry and concern etched on her face.
"No, no, I'm fine it was just a nightmare, nothing serious" Crizelda says before she yelped in pain feeling a hand slapped her back.
"Hey Featherstone! What's with ya earlier huh? Ya seem like you've seen a ghost." Alice said, another one of Crizelda's friends she made during her first day in High-school, when she couldn't find Jane, Alice Fischer, walked up to Crizelda thinking that she was alone, Alice offered to accompany Crizelda throughout their first day. "Hey, be nice, Alice." Jane said, caressing Crizelda's back where Alice slapped it.
"Crizzy, just experienced something scary." Jane continues her face looking worried for her bestfriend.
"Wasn't that just a nightmare?" Alice huffed, plopping into a chair in front of Crizelda's desk. "Well, I think it's very scary." Jane answered. "Come on, Birman, Crizz is not a baby, who's shakin' in her boots over a nightmare." Alice said waving her hand in a dismissive manner not until she notices Jane looking at her with a frown, probably from what she said to Crizelda. She continued "Look, I take it back, sorry Crizz and hope y'all be fine." Alice said maintaining a soft tone. "No, it's my fault for overreacting like that and in class too." Crizelda said as she buries her face in her hands in embarrassment. Jane looks at Alice before she takes Crizelda's red headband and places it down on her desk walking over to her seat to get a hairbrush from her bag before returning to the seat next to Crizelda's, brushing Crizelda's dark wavy hair to calm her. "It's not your fault, Crizzy, some people react like that when they go through something scary like that..."
Jane paused
"My grandpa has sleep paralysis, and grandma says that grandpa is afraid of sleeping by himself because of it"
Jane continued brushing Crizelda's hair as she remembered that event vividly in her.
I remember when I visited them in 5th grade I was sleeping with my mom on the room next door to theirs and one night I heard faint muffled screams, like you'd hear from a rat squeek but it was so faint."
Crizelda and Alice listened intently to the story
Jane shrugged. "I was so afraid, that, I shook my mom to wake up and told her what I heard, then she hurriedly got out of the bed and rushed to grandpa's room, luckily the walls were thin at the time and me and my mom were sleeping next to their room."

Jane notes the look on Alice's face who looked a little confused. "Didn't ya said that yer granny knows your pop's afraid of sleepin' alone?" Alice asked. "Yes, I did" Jane answered, as she continues brushing Crizelda's hair. "Then where's ya granny at the time that happened? Shouldn't she be with yer pops?" Alice continued asking.

"Oh, I forgot to mention why me and my mom were visiting grandpa. At the time, grandma was admitted to the hospital with malaria. She’s always outside early in the mornings, tending her garden and the area they live in is malaria-endemic. But even that never really stopped her from gardening. So she sent me and my mom to stay with grandpa," Jane explained.
"Ohhh, I get it now, gee, I hope yer gran and pop are doin' alright." Alice said in a sincere tone.

"Thanks, they're doing well right now, but grandpa still experiences sleep paralysis but rarely this time." Jane said as she puts back Crizelda's headband before fluffing the waves of her hair. "There, I hope that helps calm your nerves Crizzy." Jane says as she tucks a strand of Crizelda's hair behind her ear. "Yeah, it does help, thanks Jane." Crizelda answers with a smile.
Alice bites her lips.
"Ey, Jane, could ya...uhm...brush ma hare too? I stayed up late doing Mr. Schmitt's homework, and.... had volleyball practice in the morning... so yer hands could really help..." Alice mutters the last sentence, as Jane chuckles before she stands up and walks over to Alice as she stands behind her and brushes Alice's messy blonde hair. "I would love to help our class' star player" Jane said in a sweet tone, as Alice blushes at the "star player" compliment. "I-It's nothing" Alice replied, as she tries to hide her blush while Jane brushes Alice's blonde locks.
