Ami felt she was a little different from everyone else. As if she were an alien.
She understood every word people said, but when put together... they didn't quite make sense to her.
As a child, Ami didn't realize this; she would happily share her stories with everyone.
The adults who listened would often pause for a moment, with a facial expression that she couldn't decipher.
"Oh... that's nice," was the answer she heard most often.
As she grew up, she began to understand... the adults didn't seem to quite get what she was trying to say.
Slowly, Ami stopped bothering to share.
Back then, Ami’s friends would join her in all sorts of strange tales.
One day it was flying dogs; the next, it might be Barbie dolls battling for Earth.
It was wild and impractical, but those days were filled with joy.
Now... Ami’s friends seemed to be becoming more like adults.
After she finished a story, they would often look at her with strange expressions, sometimes even whispering behind her back.
Ami’s smiles began to fade.
Today was different.
Ami saw a doctor she hadn’t seen in a long time.
The doctor greeted her with a beaming smile, just like when she was little.
"Ami! It’s been a while," the doctor said to her.
Ami gave a nervous smile. She had so much to share but didn't know where to start.
When she finally spoke, it came out as a non-sequitur: "Hi! I’m Ami."
I messed up, Ami thought.
The doctor would probably avoid her with that same strange look, just like everyone else, right?
To Ami's surprise, the doctor simply smiled and replied naturally, "Oh, hi! I’m Dr. Lin."
Ami smiled, her shoulders finally relaxing.
After a moment’s hesitation, she said flatly, "My friends think I’m stupid."
"And what do you say to that?" the doctor asked.
The doctor didn’t ask why, which made Ami feel relieved.
She could never understand what others were thinking; "why" was always too hard a question for her.
The corners of her mouth curled up slightly. "I say, don't bully me."
She hesitated again, her expression dropping into a frown as she said dejectedly, "But she won't listen."
The doctor paused for a few seconds before speaking slowly, "But you spoke up for yourself very earnestly. I’m proud of you."
Ami was stunned.
Then, her lips curved into a joyful arc. "Yeah. I’m proud of myself, too."
