Enemies to lovers - PART 6 — “THE DAY SHE RETURNED”

Suniti had barely stepped inside the college premises when she saw him.

Sohum stood near the teachers’ parking, beside his bike, helmet in hand. Still. Waiting. As if he had calculated the exact moment she would arrive.

She was with her three friends when his voice reached them—calm, controlled, impossible to ignore.

“You three can leave,” he said. “Suniti will join you in a while.”

Her friends froze, exchanging startled looks.

Suniti didn’t react.

“You guys go,” she said flatly, already uninterested.

They hesitated, then walked away, glancing back once.

The moment they disappeared, Sohum straightened and began walking toward her.

Slow. Measured. Certain.

Suniti stepped back instinctively.

Once.

Twice.

Her heel slipped dangerously close to the open drain.

Before she could lose balance, his hand caught hers.

Firm. Immediate.

He pulled her towards him just enough to steady her.

She collided against his chest.

For a second, neither of them moved.

They were too close.

His breath brushed her forehead.

Her heart hammered violently against her ribs.

Their eyes locked.

The world narrowed to that space between them.

“Where were you these days?” he asked quietly, his voice low enough to feel personal.

Her gaze broke first.

She pushed against his chest and stepped back.

“That’s none of your concern.”

She turned to leave.

He stepped into her path—not touching her, but close enough to stop her.

“I asked you something.”

She laughed once—short, humorless.

“I informed the HOD. That’s all that matters.”

Her phone rang.

Her friends.

As she reached for it, Sohum’s hand moved instinctively, catching the phone before she could.

“Give it back,” she said sharply.

He raised his arm slightly, keeping it just out of reach.

She tried to grab it.

In the process, the distance between them vanished again.

Her fingers brushed his wrist.

Her breath stuttered.

His gaze dropped.

Just for a second.

Her lips.

The shift was immediate.

Her discomfort turned sharp, electric.

She shoved him hard and turned away without looking back.

She walked fast—face burning, ears hot, heart racing uncontrollably.

By the time she reached her friends, she realized something that unsettled her far more than the encounter itself.

Her clothes.

Her hair.

She smelled like him.

And she hated how deeply it affected her.
