SPLASH!
My feet hit a puddle hard as I ran. The street was normally quick to cross, but something had changed. The distance between houses seemed longer than usual. The rain felt abnormally cold and the night air stung when I breathed it in. At first I didn't know why I was running or why I was out so late. It all felt so odd, so strange. I felt out of place and overwhelmed. Yet, I didn't feel tired. Nor did I sweat from running so hard, but I felt as though I was running for a long time.
Then came the moaning. The deep pained moaning that echoed up and down the neighborhood. What followed were a series of heavy footsteps. Whatever the sound was coming from was running too. That's when it clicked. I finally understood why I was running. This thing was chasing me. I didn't dare look back. I could see my house up ahead and was determined to get there. The moaning persisted and was akin to an old war horn. The distance between me and home started to shrink. Before long I was at the front gate. It's metal frame was cold against my fingers and it swung open with a loud screech!
I dashed up the cracked sidewalk and onto the porch. I could hear the thing behind me still. It's moaning louder and it's footsteps stomping up the yard. I practically kicked the door open and ran inside. I quickly shut the door and throw myself against it. My breathing is heavy and my feet are planted firmly into the carpet. It's on the porch now. The moaning has stopped but I can hear soft grunts. Does it not know where I went? Has it never seen a door before? Perhaps it's not allowed to enter structures. Maybe this thing is strictly something that haunts the outside. A night time haunt. A ghoul that wonders the streets along with the witches and monsters. My grandmother often talks about the late hours of the night and that infamous witching hour. She also often talks about how the Bible states that if we knew what was outside during the night, we wouldn't stick our heads out the door.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
It figured it out. It knows I'm on the otherside of the door. It's fists are pounding into the wood. I push harder against the door, but each thud jars the thing open a couple inches. It starts moaning again. I can feel the pain in it's voice. It's unsettling, sad, and terrifying all at the same time. I stomp my soaked shoes further into the carpet and put my entire weight against the door.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
It just hits the door harder! I can hear snapping and cracking as the old door begins to splinter. It's actually breaking through it. I begin to panic. I need help, but there's no one around. The house feels empty, abandoned even. The door continues to split and break apart. Chunks of wood and sawdust fall to the floor. Something then appears in the corner of my eye. I quickly turn my head and see an oddly human-like hand wrapped around the edge of the door. It's bloody and viens pop out of it like ugly wrinkles. It begins pushing and I push back. The moaning persists. Its other hand continues to pound on the door. A jagged hole is eventually carved into the door and through it I can see a pair of eyes. Their coal black and sit in sunken in sockets. The hand on the door continues pushing, the wood under the fingers cracks and eventually breaks off in a nasty chunk. An angry grunt follows and I feel a hard hit on the back of the door. The impact is stronger than a fist and throws me forward. I hit the carpet and look back in horror as the door is slung open. Standing there is a tall human-like figure. His hands are bloody and bruised from his abuse on the door. His clothes are old and ragged. A vest of leather hangs from his torso and a red bandana is tightly wrapped around his forehead. Long black hair flows over his shoulders and his mouth is hung open in an unnatural gape. The indian lets out another pain filled moan as it enters the house.
I wake up in a cold sweat. The room around me is dark and my own. I throw the blanket off of my trembling body and catch my breath. I'm terrified and safe? It was just nightmare and the light of a new day shines through the window.
