So here I was standing on the terraces of Wembley stadium about to watch the
1966 world cup.
I had heard so much about it and since I'd invented a time traveling bike I thought I would see for myself.
Here were the two teams
England v Germany
The atmosphere was electric a band of the Royal Marines played a tune for each of the 16 competing nations
Then when they came to play the national anthem it was sung as I had never heard it sung before. Deutschland Uber Alles boomed out in its wake and the match was on.
The Germans started nervously, England's forwards moved smoothly up to the edge of the penalty area. Charlton and Peters were able to work the ball along the left at their leisure and there was anxiety in the German defense before the cross was cleared.
One of Hunt’s few imaginative passes set Stiles clear on the right and his high cross beat Tilkowski before Hottges headed it away.
The ball was returned Bobby Charlton and Tilkowski had difficulty punching it away from Hurst and he knocked himself out.
The goalkeeper was down, the whistle had gone and the German defenders had stopped challenging but Moore put the ball in the net.
The crowd cheered in the hope that next time it would be the real thing.
The first goal came in the twelfth minute and it wasn't from England it was a german goal. You could see the shock on everyone's face but I already knew the score and willed them on.
It took another six minutes before England scored their first goal to equalize,
Hurst scoring from a header.
As I watched the crowd celebrate I could feel what this meant and why every world cup is so important to them.
The next goal was a peters goal in the 75th minute.
Then the Germans pulled another one back in the last seconds of the 90th minute.
The fans all around me were silence this was not what they wanted
extra time.
The germans looked weary but the quick breaks out of defense made them dangerous.
Then in the 10th minute of extra time England took the lead again, Hurst struck again. The crowd's reaction was unbelievable.
Then as Hurst scored the final goal.
Everyone was up and yelling and stamping and slapping one another as The sky had been overcast all afternoon, but now the clouds split and the sun glared down on the stadium.
I watched as Bobby Moore passes the world cup to sir Alf Ramsey.
And could feel a tear of pride well up in my eyes, yes it was a magical day for English football and I had been there to see it.
I walked out of the stadium leaving the crowds to celebrate.
I put on my bicycle clips my bike appeared to take me home with this now cherished memory.
And thinking where will I go next? perhaps to see Apollo 11 space launch.
