At the motel

Nox had been silent since they returned from school, curled up in bed with his head buried between his knees.
Vienna and Kieran sat at a small table, the lamp above them flickering slightly.
“Nox, I’m not mad at you. You were really overexcited, really everything is fine.”
Nox lifted his gaze enough to look at his friends.
“Nothing’s fine, Kieran. I hurt you.”
Kieran sighed and walked over to his friend, sitting next to him.
“Nox, you remembered something, right? You don’t have to say it now, and please understand that I’m not mad.”

“Don’t listen to him, he’s lying… You’re always causing trouble.”

Nox slapped his hands across his face and slowly slid down. His gaze fell on Vienna, who only smiled.
“I… I remember something I shouldn’t remember…sometimes when I was on my way home from guitar lessons…near the school…the lights in the chemistry classroom were on and I could see silhouettes…but most of them didn’t look like any of the staff…something was going on there…I’m sure of it….”
“What?” Vienna stared at him open-mouthed. Kieran was writing this down in his tattered notebook. After a moment, he growled, tearing the page from the notebook.
“I’m completely lost. People it would be easier to find a cure for amnesia, wouldn’t that be it?”
“You know, I have a feeling it’s not about Watson,” Vienna whispered.
“It never was.” Nox’s words were barely audible. “Watson, didn’t kill my mother or the girls that disappeared… However, I know he’s involved in this in any way or another.”

“How can you be so sure? How do you know he’s not the one behind this?!?” Kieran looked at Nox in complete shock. Nox smiled sadly as he ran his hands over his prosthetic leg.

“I never said Watson was innocent…I just said he was most likely not behind those murders…At least not like directly…I mean he didn’t murder them him self…Maybe he works with someone….You really need to listen better Kieran. Besides for the I don’t know how many times I said it time, I don’t remember and it’s all speculations.”

“Why would a chemistry teacher have any connection to those girls’ murderers?”

“I don’t know, Vienna, that’s the worst part of it all…I can’t remember…”
Kieran sat back down, writing something down. “Okay, Watson’s trail is getting more and more complicated. Because now it turns out he most likely has a partner in crime…or worse a whole criminal group.” Vienna walked over to the window, cracking it open a bit.
“But what could his motive be?” Vienna looked at the boy. Kieran shrugged.
“Maybe money? Who knows what happened to the girls. Maybe they were sold or trafficked. And when a girl managed to escape they were hunted down by that woman that could work with him.
Nox looked at him. His face completely pale and he looked like he could puke at any moment out of fear.
“This is sick…”
“I know Nox.” Kieran sigh
“Okay, but that still doesn’t explain why she or he or they….what ever the case would kill Nox.” Vienna sat down.
“Maybe they or what ever were scared that his mother told him something?”
“Or….I saw something that I was never supposed to? Or just like my mom I started to look to deep into this…I don’t know.”
“Guys maybe we should just give up and forget about all of this?”
Kieran looked at Vienna like she just said the most absurd thing possible.
“No we’re to deep in all this. Because even if we find the perpetrators without prove we can’t do nothing. We should go to his old home…” Said Kieran.
“Wait you mean Watson’s old house?” Vienna looked at him in shock.
“Yes…he means Watson’s home” Nox whispered. Looking at his feet. He felt how his whole body was trembling and how the cold sweat was sitting on his hands, only thinking about this.
“Aw Nox, are you a coward?” Kieran smiled innocently. Nox looked at him a bit irritated.
“No… I’m just guarding my boundaries… of course I’m scared, Kieran, how would you feel if someone was planning to go inside the abandoned home of the person who most likely knows your murderer? Or even better could be your murderer?”

Nighttime Conversation of
Kieran and Vienna

Nox had already fallen asleep, curled up under the blanket. His breathing was calm, though he tossed and turned restlessly every now and then. Kieran returned to the table, carrying two mugs of tea. He placed one in front of Vienna.
“That’s strange…” Vienna began, cupping her mug in her hands.
“You mean what Nox said about school last night?”
Vienna nodded.
“Think about it, Kieran, why would anyone hold meetings in the chemistry classroom?”
Kieran looked out the window, saying nothing, just biting his lip.
“If we were trying to justify it, it would be some kind of meeting of crazy chemists who love to make life difficult for poor students with formulas.”
“Kieran…”
The boy sighed.
“If we’re looking at this more like a crime scene, then the most likely reason is that you have equipment that can be used to perform… illegal chemical reactions.”
“Wow, Kieran, you do think… sometimes.”
Kieran looked indignantly at Vienna, who only blinked innocently a few times.
Behind them, Nox stirred in the bed, but the boy didn’t wake up. As if he hadn’t heard their conversation, or didn’t want to hear it.

Kieran finally sighed, looking at his friend.
“Vienna it still doesn’t explain all these murders.”
“Kieran, what if she explains more than you think? What if these murders are just the tip of the iceberg… what if Nox’s mother really did discover something more?”
“Vienna, we were at this school…”
“No, Kieran…we were only in a few classrooms. We don’t know the whole truth…We don’t know what it was like back when this school was open.”
“So you’re suggesting to go back to this building or question Nox about it? In the hope he remembers”
Vienna nodded, pushing the chair she was sitting in back. She set the mug of tea on the table. A little of the tea spilled on the tabletop.
The girl merely approached Nox, who was still wrapped in the blanket.
She gently tapped him on the shoulder, and with a short, disoriented breath, he sat up.
He continued to wrap the blanket around himself up to his chin.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nox, do you remember anything from when you were at school? You know, before you died.”
“No, why are you asking about it?”
Nox, still sleepy, looked questioningly from Vienna to Kieran and back again. Kieran merely slapped his forehead.
“People, seriously, have you figured out this cure for amnesia already…”
Vienna sigh and sat down next to Nox.
“Nothing, I was just curious.”

“Oh, so it has nothing to do with Watson, the school, and your suspicions about the chemical room and what was going on there?”
Kieran looked at him hopefully.
“So you do know something?!”
Nox smiled at Kieran and took a deep breath.

“No…”
“…”
“Dude, are you serious?”
Vienna burst out laughing despite everything.
“So we’re going to that old apartment tomorrow after all?”
“Unfortunately, I think so, unless you knock some sense into Kieran.”
“Nox, it’s too late for that.”
“Too bad…”
“Okay, guys, but how will we get the address?”
Kieran picked up Nox’s mother’s old diary, which they’d found at school, slowly waving it in front of the others’ faces.
“I have a feeling we’ll find something in here.”
