The days went on and eventually turned into weeks. Alicia had her bandages and stitches removed, and all that was left was a nasty scar. It would probably never go away, but she was old enough not to care. Older women tended not to be as appearance-obsessed, though she certainly was when around her beloved Alyssa. Not because of the scar, but just in general.
Alicia began receiving her disability benefits and insisted on giving half to the family for food and housing. She also took over housekeeping and some of the laundry.
“You can just wash our stuff,” Alyssa told her. “Mom doesn’t mind washing her and Dad’s stuff. Besides, she’s gotta have something to do besides cooking, or she may go a little stir-crazy.”
Her mother wholeheartedly agreed. “Believe me, you’re doing more than your fair share, my dear, so don’t worry about that.”
Alicia met Cami when she came over to the house one day—the detective friend Alyssa had known since high school. Cami was a pleasant-looking strawberry blonde with long eyelashes similar to Alyssa’s. She had a nicer eye color than Alyssa—Alyssa’s were bluish-gray, but Cami’s were a uniquely interesting shade of turquoise. She was slim and fit, though overall, she wasn’t nearly as attractive as Alyssa, who Alicia fully believed had the sexiest smile on Earth. Cami’s teeth weren’t quite as white and perfect as Alyssa’s, either.
Alyssa and Alicia would hang out with Cami at times, along with another friend, a petite Asian girl named Audrey. Sometimes they’d laugh, joke, and goof off so much you’d think they were in their twenties, not their thirties and forties.
Sometimes Cami and Audrey accompanied them to look at houses, and Alicia wondered why no one had encouraged her to find her own place yet. Could this be a good sign? A sign that Alyssa wanted her to follow her to her new home? Alicia was almost afraid to ask. She didn’t want to feel like a human balloon shot with a dart. But she needed to know. She couldn’t afford to be left in the dark indefinitely. She needed to start accepting and getting used to the idea of living on her own if Alyssa’s feelings weren’t mutual, and she needed to actively start looking for a place. It would be pointless to stick around for nothing—a relationship that could never really be a relationship, though Alicia wanted to savor every day she could reside with the beautiful doctor.
When they were looking at a spacious yet cozy two-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath home on a corner lot, Alicia decided to face the inevitable. Yes or no. Were they going to be roommates, more than roommates, or nothing at all? Being older had advantages, such as hormones that were less out of control. Alicia could handle being just a roommate if they at least got to cuddle on the couch every now and then, or in bed while reading together. They didn’t have to “do it.”
The realtor, a petite blond in her late fifties dressed like a twenty-year-old, guided them through the home. Alicia impatiently and nervously awaited a moment alone.
“Ooh, I love the fireplace,” Alyssa exclaimed.
“Isn’t it fabulous?” the realtor said. “Winters may be brief here, but it’s still a nice bonus.”
She flashed a dentured smile at Alicia. She wondered what it was like to have to praise every house she sold. Could she like them all?
“So,” the realtor began, “are you both looking for a home? Or just you?”
“Well, we haven’t officially talked about that yet, but I have a feeling my little buddy is going to join me,” Alyssa said, pulling Alicia in for her famous kiss on the head.
It was all Alicia could do to keep from squealing, jumping, and running through the place like someone lit a stick of dynamite, as Alyssa went on to explain how they met.
“Oh, wow,” said the realtor.
“Yeah, and now I kinda got used to having her around. I’m technically responsible for her in a sense.”
“Living alone isn’t for everyone,” said the realtor.
“Oh, she could live alone. It’s just not what’s best for her, or what she wants.”
“So is this the house we’re gonna get?” Alicia asked eagerly.
Alyssa and the realtor laughed. “Well, we can certainly talk about it,” Alyssa said.
Outside, in the still and slightly chilly air, Alyssa spoke to the realtor while Alicia hovered nearby, daydreaming about living there with the sexy doctor. She slowly strolled down the sidewalk toward the street. The neighborhood was quiet and seemingly deserted. It was very much like her parents’ neighborhood just minutes away, except many homes were smaller.
A dog barked somewhere off in the distance, and a car rounded the corner, its lone occupant glancing at her for a split second.
“Ok, sweetie,” Alyssa said, heading to the car as the realtor went to hers.
“Bye, Alicia,” called the realtor. “Nice meeting you.”
“Nice meeting you too!” Alicia replied.
Alyssa smiled at the way Alicia raced up the driveway to the passenger door. Inside the car, she asked, “So, you like it?”
Alicia nodded vigorously. “It’s one of the nicest you’ve looked at so far. What do you think?”
“I like it,” Alyssa said, smiling.
“Were you serious about me coming with you?”
“Of course. Do you think I’d joke about that?”
“God, I hope not. Seriously, I don’t think you’d joke about anything like that. You seem big on telling it like it is, and I admire that. I just wish more people were like you.”
“Me too.”
“I’d rather hear the truth, even if it wasn’t exactly what I wanted, than some made-up story that sounded good.”
“So I can tell you anything then, right?”
Alicia nodded, wondering if this was where Alyssa would let her know she’d never consider her more than a housemate. Instead, what she got was totally unexpected. It also seemed… weird. Normally, she’d be pleased and excited to hear this from someone as hot as Alyssa, but the whole conversation left her a bit baffled. She understood what the doctor was saying; she just hadn’t expected it, and it didn’t seem like anything Alyssa personally found interesting.
“Ok, so you want to dominate me, is what you’re saying?” Alicia asked. “I thought you were the boss one, even though we’re not an official item. You take care of me. I clean the house and do your laundry, but you’re the main caretaker. You have total control, in a sense. Ok, maybe not total control, since I can leave anytime, but you have a lot.”
Alyssa laughed, lovingly squeezed her knee while keeping an eye on the road. It made Alicia feel kind of stupid.
“You’re not quite getting it, I don’t think,” Alyssa said, still smiling. “Why don’t we go get a bite to eat and discuss it there, ok?”
“Ok.”
They went into Mel’s Diner and slipped into a booth the waitress led them to. It felt chillier inside, but Alicia figured the food would warm her up.
They ordered coffee, Alyssa being her usual bossy self and suggesting Alicia get decaf.
“No problem,” Alicia said. “I only have regular coffee when I first get up unless I really want to stay awake.”
As soon as the waitress walked off, Alicia said, “Ok, let’s hear it.”
Alyssa grinned. Did she like keeping her in suspense, or was she just that amusing?
“Well, it’s complicated,” Alyssa said.
“It is?”
“It is and it isn’t.”
“Pruébame.”
“What?”
“Pruébame. It’s Spanish for ‘try me.’”
“Oh.”
“Seriously, I’ll get it sooner or later. If I can be good with languages, I can probably be good with whatever you have in mind.”
That grin again. “Yeah, only you tend to be better with the things most of us don’t get.”
“That’s true,” Alicia said, sipping her coffee.
“Ok,” Alyssa said, tone turning serious. “Ever heard of BDSM?”
“Yes, but I’m not sure what it stands for. Bedroom Domination Sodomy Master or something?”
Alyssa burst out laughing.
“Somehow, I doubt most people would know this, dear doc.”
“Bondage, discipline, submissiveness, domination,” Alyssa corrected.
“Ok, so… Bondage—”
“Shh-shh,” Alyssa giggled.
“I get the general idea, but don’t get the point you’re trying to make. Are you saying this is something you’re into?”
Alyssa shook her head. “Never done it before.”
“But it’s something you’re considering?”
The doctor nodded. “Let’s just say it’s been a fantasy of mine for a while.”
“And why haven’t you acted on that fantasy before, sexy lady?”
Alyssa grinned impishly.
