Hawaiian native Kyla Rembler is sent to a university in Northern California to conduct a study on campus life and write about it for a well-known magazine. While she is there, she will live the life of the other students, with the exception of attending classes. She will live, sleep, shower, and eat mostly in the dorm she is assigned to. Everything she does is part of what she has agreed to do… except accidentally kill a student.
While she is there, she will become fond of the dorm’s overnight security guard, Zoey, with whom she often stays up late at night to chat. Zoey appreciates her company and comes to care for Kyla as well. Life is good until one day Kyla is in the wrong place at the wrong time. After she is rescued, the perpetrators are still on the run, believing all the witnesses are dead. The police quickly realize Kyla will be in definite danger once the criminals learn she has survived.
She is then placed in the Witness Protection Program. Sure that the campus is a safe place for her, guards are assigned to stay with Kyla: a somewhat flaky but kind younger guy during the daytime, and an attractive older woman at night. Kyla is strongly advised not to leave the room under any circumstances and to remain with the officer in charge at all times until the perps are captured.
Although she is frustrated that her assignment has been halted by the unfortunate events, and while she misses her late-night chats with the lovely Italian Zoey, she strikes up an interesting relationship with Corrine, the German-French officer who replaces those nighttime chats.
What Kyla doesn’t know is that someone has been watching. Very, very closely. They too, have a secret to hide—just like she does. One they plan to use to their full advantage
