The train cut through the darkness like a silver serpent, its wheels crying against the rails. Outside, the world was swallowed in shadows, the moon hiding behind heavy clouds. This was no ordinary route — everyone knew the legend of this stretch of tracks.
They called it the Dark Line.312Please respect copyright.PENANApH9LX21SsP
A place where light feared to stay.312Please respect copyright.PENANAFipJGbVOc8
A place people avoided… unless they had no choice.
Inside one of the dimly lit compartments, a family huddled together. Soft whispers and faint laughter drifted from the far corner, where cousins and uncles sat talking as if nothing outside could touch them.
But in the other corner, a girl in a black dress sat alone, shivering. Her hands trembled in her lap, her eyes darting toward the dark window where only her own pale reflection stared back.
I told them… I told them not to travel on a night like this, she thought. But who listens to me?
A sudden voice pulled her from her thoughts.312Please respect copyright.PENANABqwIroqu9R
heer…”
She turned sharply. For a heartbeat, her breath caught.
Her older brother was smiling faintly at her from across the aisle. “My dear, what happened?” he asked, sliding into the seat beside her.
She leaned closer, her voice a low whisper. “We shouldn’t be on this train tonight. But my cousin insisted…” Her eyes flicked toward the others — an aunt, two girls, and a boy — all lost in their chatter, too busy to notice her unease.
Her brother’s smile didn’t fade. “Do not fear, little flower. I’m here. Who would dare touch you while I am beside you?”
He glanced at their uncle, who sat across from them, pointing toward an elderly man near the door. “Look — our grand-uncle is here too. We are not alone.”
Still, his gaze hardened, his voice dropping to something only she could hear. “If anyone so much as lays a hand on you… I will take the light from his eyes and turn his day into night.”
Her eyes softened. Without a word, she rested her head against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
And in that moment, a silent prayer rose in her heart.
If I could… I would give my life to be yours, Brother. Because I never want to lose you.
Her sister rested gently in their brother’s lap, eyes closed, seeking comfort. The boy sat calmly, watching the family with quiet concern.
“Brother,” the girl whispered, her voice fragile, “look at them — so busy laughing and talking, as if we don’t belong.”
The brother’s gaze softened as he looked at the family. “Hmm… my flower,” he said softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from his sister’s face. “If our parents had lived, maybe we’d be like them — carefree and at ease.”
He looked down at his sister in his lap, caressing her hair gently. “But you worry too much. Don’t let your delicate mind drown in these fears. You are mine, and I am yours. Always.”
She lifted her head, meeting his eyes with a quiet resolve. “I’m not saying that, brother. I’m saying… you’ve done so much for our uncle, for this family. But they never loved us back. Not once. No thanks, no care.”
He sighed deeply, tightening his hold. “If I don’t find a job soon, I’ll be forever in their debt.”
A tender smile touched his lips as he kissed his sister’s forehead. “I’m here now, aren’t I? That’s all that matters. Why fear when I stand beside you?”
From nearby, a soft voice interrupted — the gentle voice of an old woman. “Look at this lovely scene, siblings bound by love.”
Their grandmother stood, smiling warmly, and settled beside them. She reached out, placing her hand gently on the girl’s head. “You are our light, child.”
But the warmth was soon shattered.
From the dark corner of the compartment, a sharp voice crackled over the loudspeaker, cutting through the calm:
“Attention passengers! Be warned — robbers are active on this route. They have broken the tracks ahead to stop the train and rob all aboard. Please stay alert and protect yourselves.”
A chill passed through the air.
These were the darkest days of the girl’s life — trapped between shadows she couldn’t fight, and a family she didn’t belong to.
