SPLASH!
They hit the lake with a triple plop—Nido first, flailing like a falling noodle. He surfaced with a gasp, spitting water and hair.
"Alive! Wet—but alive!"
General Au emerged beside him like an armored submarine. "Get to shore. Now."
They swam, dragging themselves onto the muddy bank. Nido flopped onto the grass, ready to kiss the dirt, when a thunderous roar shook the air.
The dragon was back.
Wings spread wide, it landed with a splash, steam rising from its nostrils.
General Au stepped in front. "Prepare yourself. Use the Rune again."
"What? I don't even know how I did it the first time!" Nido shouted, already fumbling for Heiminbrand.
"Oh, great," the sword groaned. "You again."
"I need to activate the Rune!"
"Yeah, and I need a nap. Sadly, neither of us are getting what we want."
The dragon roared and unleashed another fiery blast. General Au raised his shield and braced against the flames.
"NOW, NIDO!"
"I'm trying!" Nido yelled. "How do I do the thing?!"
"You have to calm down," Heiminbrand said. "Feel the wind. Let it build. Then shout like you mean it."
Nido closed his eyes. Deep breath. He pointed the sword at the dragon.
"WIND POWER!"
PFFFT.
A sad puff of air burst from the blade like a magical hiccup.
"...Seriously?" Nido said.
"Did you just fart at the dragon?"
General Au blocked another attack. "Focus!"
"Okay okay!" Nido yelled, chest heaving.
"Forget the panic," Heiminbrand said. "Trust yourself. Believe in the wind. Be the breeze."
Nido nodded. Slower this time. He closed his eyes, felt the wind stir around him.
The breeze grew. Swirling. Lifting leaves. A twister of energy began to rise.
Light exploded around the blade—blinding and beautiful.
Then... it faded.
Nido looked down.
A tiny dagger blade shimmered at the end of Heiminbrand's hilt.
"...What is this? A letter opener?!"
The dragon reared back, gathering a massive breath.
"No time!" Nido screamed. With zero plan and even less dignity, he hurled Heiminbrand straight at the dragon's face.
"WHAT THE—TRAITOR!" the sword yelled mid-flight.
The blade spun and grazed the dragon's eye. The beast screeched, fire faltering, and flew away—roaring in pain and fury.
Nido collapsed, panting.
Heiminbrand landed nearby with a thunk.
"What am I, a boomerang? Newsflash—I don't like coming back."
