The feedback from the long-distance fatigue driving incident a few days ago quickly yielded company improvement results. Li Haojun was reappointed as the production supervisor of the Kalispel factory and informed that similar appointments might follow. He was required to prepare a suitable private high-speed transportation vehicle, such as a flying car, and his supervisor also thoughtfully gave him a raise.
Li Haojun abandoned his previous dream of a water-wading off-road vehicle, because he needed speed, not just traversing terrain on the ground. He really liked an open-wheel, Formula One-style flying car with tandem seats. The main wing was cleverly designed; when driving on the ground, it acted as a diffuser to break through airflow. The front and rear wings could change angle and curvature, serving not only as control surfaces but also generating positive or negative lift under different conditions. The rotary engine, due to its ignition timing, roared at high speeds like the high-revving piston engines of old Formula One cars.
But thinking of the three women he cared about, if one day he needed to take all three of them on a trip, or even just the two sisters, this salary wouldn't be enough. Even without being so vain, what if there was a natural disaster or emergency requiring him to evacuate them?
With sufficient reason, Li Haojun decided he needed a four-seater flying car, so he chose a diamond-shaped four-seater. It looked good; although not as flashy as a Formula One car, this lifting body structure with retractable main wings and a silver body looked as cool as a luxury sports car.
This trip to Kalispel was Li Haojun's first time piloting it, relying mainly on the autopilot system. After landing at the airport, there was still a road to travel to Grant Mountain. This is the advantage of flying cars—the ability to flexibly switch between the sky and roads. However, while passing through the city of LaSalle and Columbia Falls, he found the city deathly silent; no vehicles were on the road, no pedestrians were on the move.
Li Haojun checked the time; it was midday. No one was out for lunch, no one was out in the sun. Although he wondered if the townspeople had vanished, work was important, so he had to continue through the city with his questions.
The workplace was located at the foot of Mount Grant, near the Hungryjos Reservoir. The factory had no name, only a code, and its entrance was disguised as an aquatic breeding research institution. After verifying his identity, Li Haojun set up an administrator account, downloaded the data, and ordered lunch as an employee of this institution.
While checking the data, he learned that lunch had been delivered by drone. It seemed the small city was still operational, but the deathly silence left a lingering question mark in Li Haojun's mind.
He didn't have time to dwell on it; his energy had to be focused on work. However, the factory's products and raw materials were classified. The operators only knew the code and procedures, operating in a double-blind manner, yet there was frequent movement of raw materials and products in and out. The client information hadn't been mentioned when he was assigned to come here, and the factory didn't even have a name, only a code. One of Li Haojun's strengths was that he didn't pry into things that didn't concern him; he just wanted to do his job and live his life well. Besides, he had Qin Wenjing waiting for him at home, and he had appointments with the sisters Kathy and Maria, whom he was also concerned about. He didn't want to get into trouble for uncovering someone else's secrets, or get himself imprisoned in a dark power struggle.
Busy times always fly by, and before he knew it, the sun was setting. In the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, the polar night comes early in winter. Emerging from the factory facilities, the setting sun shone on the reservoir's surface. Ripples in the wind shattered the sunlight, scattering shimmering red and orange fragments between the crests and troughs, singing the final lament of the day.
This alluring beauty...if only Kassia were here. Hmm, Li Haojun couldn't help but examine himself. Had he already fallen hopelessly in love with Kassia's gentleness? Was he starting to tire of her? He thought about it, and it probably wasn't. His unspoken feeling about Qin Wenjing was that she was waiting for him at home, and that home where she waited was his eternal refuge.
In the fading glow of the sunset, Li Haojun drove down the reservoir road and back to the city of Kalispel. As darkness fell, even the city's central streets remained dimly lit, deserted, devoid of commercial activity, and utterly lifeless. Following the navigation, Li Haojun found a roadside fast-food restaurant; only a handful of customers were present, and the staff consisted of middle-aged and elderly men and women. Li Haojun murmured to himself, "Is this the city's silence caused by its aging population?"
Looking at the staff, there was little interaction between them; they all seemed lifeless. His initial thought of chatting with them to inquire about the area vanished. After finishing his meal, he paid, complimented the food, and left.
Taking off from Kalispel Airport in the darkness, the speed of over 200 miles per hour proved incredibly beneficial; he no longer had to endure the winding roads and speed limits. Landing at Moshelake Airport an hour later, he drove home along the highway, the entire journey as easy as a short local trip. Only, the car was so long and wide that he had to build a semi-arched garage outside the small yard's fence, resembling a fighter jet's hangar.
Eagerly stepping into his cozy little courtyard, the light shone through the curtains, illuminating the yard, but Li Haojun didn't see her. He followed the doorway, opened it, and went inside. She wasn't in the living room, but the light was on, seemingly for him. He glanced at the kitchen out of the corner of his eye; no one was there. Pushing open the slightly ajar door to Qin Wenjing's bedroom,
it was her. She sat on a stool in front of her dressing table, wearing a semi-transparent white silk chiffon nightgown, her hands raised as she pinned her hair up behind her head. The petal-shaped sleeves slid down from her wrists to her arms. Her back was straight as she sat on the backless stool, the drape and sheer fabric of the nightgown strongly highlighting the lines of her shoulders, back, waist, and hips.
Qin Wenjing saw Li Haojun return in the mirror. She didn't speak, nor did she show any expression; she simply looked at him, continuing to pin her hair up.
Li Haojun walked over, stood behind her, bent down, and pressed his face against her neck, then her cheek, gently kissing her lips. Holding her waist, savoring the silky smoothness of her pajamas against her skin, Li Haojun suddenly realized something: he hadn't washed his hands since returning from outside. His hands had been sweaty from all the rushing around.
"I need to wash my hands," Li Haojun said, grinning.
This time, Qin Wenjing smiled, turning to look in the direction he'd gone.
But it seemed Li Haojun didn't just wash his hands. Qin Wenjing waited a moment, but he didn't return. She got up, turned off the bedroom light, drew back the curtains, and stood by the windowsill, gazing up at the night sky. Soon, the decorative lights in the yard went out, making the starlight even clearer. The living room lights went out, and the yard was enveloped in the stillness of the night, devoid of any warm hues.
Li Haojun emerged from the bathroom, walked through the hallway and living room, and casually turned off all the lights. Entering the bedroom, Li Haojun saw Qin Wenjing standing by the window. Moonlight illuminated her hair, cheeks, neck, and the outline of her nightgown, while the sheer, shimmering chiffon fabric accentuated her silhouette against the light.
Her symmetrically outstretched arms and the angle of their bends resembled a bell, conveying a sense of stability. Her hands rested on the windowsill, a horizontal surface illuminated by the moonlight, reflecting off the light from her lightly draped dress, making her waist appear even more slender and delicate. The nightgown, hanging lightly from her shoulders and back, was supported by her hips and buttocks, the fabric diffusing the moonlight to illuminate the curves of her figure. She stood barefoot on the ground, her legs together.
Li Haojun admired her for a while before quietly approaching, putting his arm around her waist and leaning against her.
"Waiting for me?" Li Haojun whispered in her ear.
Qin Wenjing didn't answer, but simply leaned her head towards Li Haojun before turning away. The moonlight illuminated her face, the ethereal nightgown covering her chest, and her limp, hanging arms, like a night-blooming cereus blooming in the night. In an instant, she flashed through Li Haojun's mind, so charming and delicate, blooming for those who admired her.
