Li Haojun and Qin Wenjing drove to a motel, number 6. The ambient lighting around the spherical motel cast a soft green hue on their car. The only red brake light seemed to add warmth to the atmosphere.
They got out and entered through the base of the spherical motel. As they entered the building, the ambient lights on the surrounding lawn went out. The motel had three floors: the first floor contained a kitchen, bathroom, bedding, toiletries, and food; the second floor had bedrooms; and the third floor had a viewing restaurant with transparent glass floors. The decor was minimalist and modern.
"What do you have for dinner?" Qin Wenjing asked the robot-like receptionist at the entrance. The lights in the food display area diagonally opposite slowly illuminated. Qin Wenjing gave Li Haojun a look, and the two selected some items, carrying them directly to the third floor. They placed them on a couple's table, where a candlelight-like table lamp slowly lit up.
Qin Wenjing opened the sunshade, leaving only the glass dome exposed, allowing them to gaze at the starry sky. “Sit down,” Qin Wenjing gestured to the dining table.
“Please sit down too,” Li Haojun gestured to the dining table as well.
They sat down, looking at each other in silence. Qin Wenjing smiled first.
“What are you thinking about?”
Li Haojun was taken aback, unsure what she meant. Before he could answer, Qin Wenjing glanced at the candle and the candlelight illuminating Li Haojun's face, then lowered her eyes and said softly,
“It used to be with you too.” Her tone was tinged with a sigh.
Li Haojun opened his mouth, unsure how to respond.
Qin Wenjing suddenly turned her head, stood up, and said with her back to Li Haojun, “I’m going downstairs to get something to drink,” and then she was already at the bottom of the stairs.
Through the glass floor, Li Haojun watched Qin Wenjing descend the stairs. The dim stairwell lighting flickered and went out as she walked along the railing, like fireflies, fleeting and ephemeral, highlighting Qin Wenjing's petite figure. Li Haojun couldn't help but feel a pang of pity for the time they had missed together, and for the fleeting nature of their present.
A moment later, Qin Wenjing brought up a bottle of white wine. Seeing her opportunity, Li Haojun quickly took it, saying, "Let me, let me." After opening the wine, Li Haojun poured for Qin Wenjing and himself, raising his glass. He waited for her to pick up hers, and they gently clinked glasses.
"Thank you…" he began, then realized it was inappropriate. What was there to thank? So he put down his glass, walked around the small table to Qin Wenjing, knelt on one knee, took her other hand, and gently kissed the back of her hand. The two embraced.
A silent yet profound candlelight dinner unfolded beneath the stars. She was gentle and considerate, he humble and polite; she was quick-witted and intelligent, he sincere and loyal.
After finishing her meal, Qin Wenjing stood up and said, "I'm going downstairs to take a shower. You can continue eating."
"Okay," Qin Wenjing replied, watching her walk down the stairs. Li Haojun sensed something was amiss and quickly followed, grabbing her arm. Qin Wenjing turned around, looking at him with a puzzled expression.
"Let me adjust the water temperature for you," Li Haojun explained.
"Okay, thank you." Li Haojun took off his shoes and went into the bathroom, running water to test the floor. It wasn't slippery. He adjusted the water temperature, making sure it wasn't too hot, and then, feeling it was just right, turned back to see Qin Wenjing sitting there, arms crossed, tilting her head to watch him work.
Seeing the smile on Qin Wenjing's face, Li Haojun felt much more gratified. How could he possibly let her kindness go to waste?
Through the frosted glass of the bathroom, Li Haojun could vaguely see Qin Wenjing's back. He sat quietly on the edge of the bed, watching everything. He wasn't a voyeur; he cared too much about this partner and was afraid of anything unexpected taking her away from him. His previous amnesia had already caused him to miss so much of their past; he couldn't allow anything else to happen to her or himself.
Soon, Qin Wenjing finished showering. She came out of the bathroom without using the hotel towel or any of the hotel's toiletries, instead bringing her own. She wore her own pajamas.
Seeing Li Haojun still sitting at the bathroom door, she smiled and handed him her toiletries.
"You should take a shower too."
"Okay," Li Haojun took them and went into the bathroom.
Facing the wall, hot water flowed down his body from above, the warmth soothing his skin and stirring his soul. What would happen next, Li Haojun didn't know. All he could do was cleanse every inch of his body for her.
Li Haojun knew that glass had a certain degree of transparency, and forcing himself to do it would be awkward. He glanced back at the head of the bed in the bedroom; Qin Wenjing wasn't there watching him. He then turned to look at the third floor; she was there, reclining on a deck chair, gazing at the starry sky. Li Haojun didn't use the hotel's towel, but instead washed, wrung out, and put on his underwear.
He quietly walked up the stairs. Qin Wenjing turned her head and saw Li Haojun reaching the top.
"You're here too?"
"Yes," Li Haojun walked to the deck chair, lay down on her left side, and gently wrapped his right arm around her neck. The night was deep; there was no moon tonight, only a sky full of stars. The dark shadows of the trees on the horizon formed the edge of the stars, and the shimmering Milky Way illuminated the deepest part of the night sky.
She turned her head; her hair was still slightly damp. She lay on her side, placing her right hand on Li Haojun's chest and her right leg over him. Her soft breathing reached Li Haojun's ear.
Li Haojun put his arm around her back and said,
"How long were we together before I lost my memory in the car accident? Can you tell me? I... I have absolutely no idea. I'm just really curious."
"Yes..." Qin Wenjing hesitated for a moment, "About ten years."
"How did we meet? Was it through this company?"
"No, we've known each other since childhood."
"Were we neighbors?"
"Yeah, about that."
"How can it be about that?"
"Classmates and neighbors,"
"Oh, okay."
"Sigh, how do you calculate our ten years together?"
"That's the time we've been together since we became partners."
"Oh, and before that?"
"Before that, I didn't know where you were."
"Oh, sigh? Weren't we childhood friends?"
"Yeah, we separated after going to university,"
"Why?"
"Well, it was my fault, I..." Qin Wenjing hesitated as she spoke.
"If you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to. I'm just asking about my background, haha," Li Haojun said, laughing self-deprecatingly.
“Okay, want to know your background? Call me Mom.” Li Haojun turned his head, and Qin Wenjing was looking at him with a grin.
“Mom!” she said, lowering her head as if to eat. Qin Wenjing giggled, amused. After laughing, she said,
“It’s my fault. I didn’t see how much you loved me. Maybe it’s the fault of being young, or maybe I didn’t know what I wanted, or perhaps I just didn’t know how to make a decision.”
“Alright, it’s not your fault. We’re together now, aren’t we?” Li Haojun said, kissing Qin Wenjing’s cheek.
On the recliner under the stars, Li Haojun held Qin Wenjing’s cheeks with both hands. Their eyes met, and gently, he kissed her lips; passionately, she kissed the one she loved. Li Haojun tightly embraced Qin Wenjing’s back with his right hand and her waist with his left. This frail woman was so dear to him; even though his memories of her only began two months ago, her image seemed already etched into his life.
Li Haojun wanted to satisfy her, to fulfill all her needs.
...Qin Wenjing didn't speak, only smiled at Li Haojun, slowly retreating to her original position, then resting her head on Li Haojun's chest.
"Plop, plop," Qin Wenjing murmured, looking at Li Haojun sideways,
"A long time ago, you let me lie on your chest like this, listening to your heartbeat. I was very young then, and didn't know what it meant."
"When was that?" Li Haojun asked softly,
"When we were childhood sweethearts."
"That's not right, you're 43, I'm 34. When we were childhood sweethearts, I probably wasn't even born yet." Li Haojun thought for a moment and said,
"You forgot? You paused in the middle."
"Oh, right," Li Haojun couldn't refute it, so he could only agree.
"Otherwise what? How do you think you got through it all?" Qin Wenjing said with a devilish smile,

"That's how you spent those years..." Li Haojun gently embraced Qin Wenjing and stopped asking any questions. Faced with such a partner who was both enchanting and ethereal, both tender and playful, both devoted and persistent, everything else was superfluous.
