NOTE: As is usual for me , I wrote this piece in one sitting. It is largely stream of consciousness focused on poems I read before writing it (2019) by young poets, mostly young women, about cutting and other forms of self-harm in response to pain one cannot deal with. Some are beautiful, powerful pieces. I realize (hope) some may have been fiction, though I doubt it. All break my heart and make me feel completely powerless--other than to make an encouraging comment I know will mean very little if read. I've always dealt with my own pain through music and poetry. I don't know how else to reach out. Unseen tears mean nothing to those in pain. If only they could see themselves through the eyes of those in their lives who can see deeper than the reflection in the mirror. If only.
