“Did you hear that? Some animals said they sensed residual pink energy, as if it’s hidden deep in the sewers,” Lin Xiaoqiang told Wang Meili and Otaku what he had just heard.
Wang Meili frowned. “The sewers? That place is dirty and smelly. What could Dr. Klaus have possibly left down there?”
Otaku, however, looked excited. “Maybe it’s a mutant pink alligator! Or talking pink rats! This would be an explosive exclusive scoop!”
Though Otaku’s imagination was as wild as ever, Lin Xiaoqiang felt this clue was important. The unease and confusion in the animals’ voices made him suspect that some hidden secret lurked deep in the sewer tunnels.
The three put on protective masks and cautiously approached an entrance to the Barbie City sewer system. Lifting the heavy manhole cover, a wave of damp, rotten stench hit them, accompanied by faint, indistinguishable whispers that sounded sometimes like the wind, sometimes like faint speech.
“The smell here… is really unbearable,” Wang Meili said, pinching her nose with a look of disgust.
Lin Xiaoqiang pricked up his ears, trying to make out the sounds coming from the sewer. He heard the squeaks of rats, the rustle of cockroaches scurrying, and the murmur of flowing water. But beneath all that was a faint, elusive whisper echoing deep inside his mind. The voice carried a trace of the familiar pink energy aura — yet it was subtler and more unsettling than before.
“I hear it too! Sounds like someone’s talking, but I can’t make out what,” Otaku frowned. His “precognition” ability seemed disrupted here, blurry and unreliable.
Carefully, the trio ventured deeper into the damp darkness. Guided by the weak light from Otaku’s camera, they moved slowly. The tunnels twisted and turned, sewage flowing alongside, and they kept stepping on slippery, unpleasant patches underfoot.
As they went further, the faint whispers grew clearer. Lin Xiaoqiang strained to recognize the words. They seemed to repeat strange phrases like “resonance,” “frequency,” and “control.”
Suddenly, they reached a larger underground chamber. By the dim light, they saw a small device at its center, quietly emitting a faint pink glow, accompanied by the eerie whispering. Broken test tubes and strange crystals lay scattered around it, and the air was thick with a faint, sickly sweet pink scent.
“Is this… something Dr. Klaus left behind?” Wang Meili said cautiously, staring at the glowing device.
Lin Xiaoqiang focused on the thoughts of the nearby animals. Several rats and stray cats appeared extremely anxious and fearful. Their minds echoed with fragmented, chaotic phrases, as if strongly disturbed.
“This device… is still emitting abnormal energy! And… it seems to be affecting the animals’ minds!” Lin Xiaoqiang said grimly. “Those animals suddenly speaking human language—this device is most likely the cause!”
As they carefully examined the strange apparatus, sudden hurried footsteps echoed from the far end of the sewer.
“Someone’s coming!” Otaku shouted urgently.
