Just-Published Audiobooks
I had one of my prior books of short stories (Mindscapes) turned into a professionally produced audiobook more than a decade ago in part because I’ve grown to love and depend on audiobooks given my long commutes and listen to more books than I read these days. But, because I don’t pay for advertisement or reviews, and therefore get very modest sales for my self-published books, the prospect of paying for or splitting royalties with a production company is unattractive. I was researching available options to use text to speech services powered by AI when I received an invitation to port my books through one of the aggregators I use to distribute my independently published books and short stories. Intrigued by the prospect of using AI to produce audiobooks at no cost to me, through a reasonable royalty on sales, I decided to test the waters and found a second similar option through another source that publishes my eBooks and print books. So, I went ahead and spent a very intense week of work porting three of my books in both their original English and in my prior translations.
The process is still imperfect and time consuming to turn out a reasonable result, in my view at least. But I was nonetheless for the most part both surprised and pleased with what the state of the current technology can do. And I actually enjoyed spending the time needed to tweak the auto-generated audio from my published books that I found acceptable.
if you’d like to gauge the results, I’ll place a few links below to my novel (English original and my Spanish translation), earlier short story collection (also in both languages) and my introductory tome on copyright law that may be of special interest to fellow authors and artists of all types. Hope you may find something of interest there. (They’re also available through Audible.)
By the time you read this, I will likely have ported a few more titles that will be available on Audible, Amazon, Google Play and other retailers. I have much greater flexibility to set pricing that with my previous experience with a professionally narrated and produced book (Mindscapes) distributed through Audible which pleases me since I have long fought to keep the prices of my textbooks and other books created through traditional publishers at an affordable price for students and the general public.
You can get a brief preview of the audiobooks at the following links (I do not control the preview size, but they run around five minutes, and you can get a good feel for the narration and at least a brief sample of the actual writing.
