本書的書名為「一山高」是我寫作生涯的第二本長篇小說，這次我嘗試從歷史下手，為什麼取名「一山高」呢？一山高有兩個含義。其一，山高合起來為「嵩」字，就是本書主人公「嚴嵩」的名字；其二，喻意「一山還有一山高，人外有人天外有天」的意思。


我想寫的不只是嚴嵩而是想舖陳歷史的脈絡，從中補捉亙古不變的人性，但一山高畢竟是小說所以真真假假，假假真真。有人說嚴嵩是權臣，我不以為然，我認為他是寵臣，因為他的權力完全來自皇帝的賦予，而他面對的是一個聰明睿智又強猜強勢的嘉靖皇帝，能夠在嘉靖皇帝之下任首輔近二十年，證明他不是只有貪婪的能力而已。


明朝共有十六個皇帝，用了十七個年號，有殺人如麻的，有苦幹勤幹的，有篡晚輩帝位又株人十族的，有修仙煉丹的，有躲在宮裡二十餘年不見大臣的，有木匠，有封自己當將軍的，有當過俘虜的，什麼都有什麼都不奇怪，嘉靖皇帝就是修仙煉丹的，道號：「九天弘教普濟生靈掌陰陽功過大道思仁紫極仙翁一陽真人元虛圓應開化伏魔忠孝帝君。」


不得不說嘉靖朝名人輩出；有錚錚鐵骨海瑞、柔媚貪婪的嚴嵩、勇略超群的戚繼光、創發心學的王守人、變革中興能臣張居正。對我而言明朝很吸引人，充滿了魔幻色彩，尤其嘉靖一朝，我邀請大家一同進入明朝這個樣樣都有的王朝樂園。
