I work in an MNC company; my company provides round-trip cab facilities to all its employees. So today, I went to the office and when I reached the floor, I noticed that none of my colleagues were present. I called my manager, and she told me that no one was coming to the office today. She asked me to cancel my cab ride and go home early by metro.

I did cancel my cab ride and went to the nearest metro station—as I had already mentioned, my company provides round-trip cab facilities—so I couldn’t even remember the last time I had traveled such a long distance by metro. Still, I boarded the metro around 6:45, which is a peak hour when most offices are bustling with commuters. The metro was extremely crowded; there wasn’t even enough space to stand, so I didn’t expect to get a seat.

I felt very uncomfortable while standing; I was thinking, “What the fuck is happening?” Not because I’m a rich kid—after all, I do travel by metro—but because I don’t even have a personal vehicle. I am just a middle-class boy who works in the corporate world to survive. So there I was, cursing myself for no reason.

As my journey continued, I observed many things. I saw hundreds of men standing in the metro with dry faces, tired eyes, and the heavy burden of responsibility on their shoulders. Then I started to question myself: Today, you have to travel by metro just for one day, and yet you find it uncomfortable and inconvenient. But imagine being one of those men who travel by metro on a daily basis—five or six days a week—simply because they don’t have the luxury of riding in a cab.

Then I asked myself, “Why do we even struggle? What is the reason behind it?” It seems clear that a man without money is considered nothing; that’s why many work so hard to provide for their families and fulfill their responsibilities as the man of the house. But is it really worth sacrificing your life without even giving it a thought? We work hard, save money, buy properties, and invest in different options so that we can secure both our future and that of our families. But the point is: will we really be around in the future we worry about?

This is the question I often ask myself: We have no idea how much time we have because life is uncertain. It takes only seconds to turn a living person into a dead one, yet we continue to ignore this fact as if we were immortal. I personally feel that no matter how much I try, I can’t be a responsible person—and I know this, which is why I don’t even want responsibilities in my life. I want to live life in a laid-back mode; I don’t even want to be a millionaire, nor do I want luxury cars or the constant hustle. But when I choose to live this way, society declares me an unsuccessful person—a loser who is running away from responsibilities. Yet, why don’t they understand that I simply do not want responsibilities? I am still searching for the reason why a person can’t live without them.
