I am trying something new. Well, maybe not that new. It’s just that I’ve been doing this in my head for a while, but I recently figure that I should also write the process down semi-systematically.
It is a way to write Cantonese derivative lyric onto an existing song. I call this exploratory lyric fitting. The idea is simple. I already know the melody of a song. I also already know roughly what kind of content I want to write. So I just try to fit Cantonese words onto the melody through trial-and-error.
I’ve been doing this in my head for a while. But, the problem is, an “idea” is very fluid, such that it easily slips away, and I easily forget it or distort it. Also, if it just live in my head without materializing, subsequent works become difficult. Most importantly, without any tangible record, and unable to recall what I have thought of, I cannot pick up and continue my work after interruptions.
The new way I do this is that, I simply jot down whatever Cantonese words that I guess may fit onto the melody and fit into the general idea of the song. I may write it down on a mobile app, on some scrap paper, or on whatever. And then, I may note down which “line” of melody I am writing about. It is that simple. No tricks.
Due to the nature of trial-and-error, a line of melody is associated to a lot of trials. And it is quite repetitive between trials.
So, let’s take, as an example, a lyric fitting exercise I have been working on last week.
