Moonlight & Wildflowers
She first saw him in a dream—or perhaps it was real, but the edges were too soft to tell the difference. The sky above was a river of silver, stars spilling like ink onto the horizon, and she stood barefoot in a field of wildflowers that swayed without wind.
She was waiting for something, though she did not know what. Then, as if the world had taken a breath and let it out in slow reverence, he stepped into the glow of the moon.
His presence was quiet, but it filled the air like a song she had always known. His hair was dark as the spaces between constellations, his eyes holding the night’s secrets. He moved like a whisper, and yet, when he looked at her, it was as though the entire universe had stopped to listen.
"You're late," she murmured, though she had never met him before.
He smiled, and the stars burned brighter. "I've been searching for you in every dream."
She did not know how she knew him, but love was written in the way he reached for her, his fingertips brushing against hers like a vow. Time folded upon itself, a thousand past lives echoing in the space between their touch.
In that moment, they were endless.
They danced in the moonlight without music, only the sound of their hearts keeping time. He traced poetry onto her skin with invisible ink, and she whispered stories into his ear that only the stars could understand.
The night stretched on, and the world outside this dream felt distant, as if reality itself had dissolved into nothingness. But even dreams cannot last forever.
The horizon began to bleed with dawn, and she felt the ache of farewell before the sun had even kissed the sky. His fingers slipped from hers like mist, and she reached for him, but he was already fading.
"Will I see you again?" she asked, her voice barely above a breath.
His smile was soft, knowing. "Close your eyes, love. I am always waiting for you in the dream."
And then, he was gone.
She awoke with the scent of wildflowers in her hair and the ghost of his touch lingering on her skin. The morning light felt colder than it should, the real world dull in comparison to the one she had just left.
But she knew, as sure as the moon would rise again, that when sleep took her once more, she would find him waiting in the field beneath the stars.
And so, she closed her eyes.
