The God's were in low spirits after thier battle with Typhon.
They were as big as the highest trees on the side of Mt.Parnasus,but even so he towered over them as the heavens loom over the earth.
Their combined might could tear up mountains by their roots and hurl them through space,but Typhon swatted it aside as an elephant swats aside a gnat,laughing all the while.
His breath of fire scorched the land so that only blackened cinders remained.The air was poisoned and the rivers fouled.Death was everywhere.
Each day he taunted them from mount Aetna,and each time they came back from the fight worse for wear.
One day the cyclops Steropes came to Zeus in his palace among the stars.
"Yes,Steropes,what is it that you want? I'm afraid I don't have time for idle chatter. I am weary from our latest defeat."
"Lord Zeus,"the monster said,"don't despair.I have made a weapon which will lay him low."
"Really? Forgive me if I sound doubtful but there isn't a weapon forged that can stop Typhon!"
The cyclops unwrapped a bundle and placed it on the floor.
" I call it the Sleepless Bolt,"Steropes told him."Because it's fashioned from the primeval elements.Even Typhon won't be impervious to its bite."
Zeus looked at the thing in curiosity.
"It's white hot,like fire,"he said,"but Typhon breathes flames.I don't see how this business will stop him."
"Allow me to demonstrate,"the cyclops said,and he hurled the spear at the kings feet.
The next thing he knew,there was a blinding flash and Zeus was thrown to the floor in astonishment.When he dared look around,his majestic palace of gold was in a shambles.Only smoking ruins of once shimmering columns remained.
It was then that they heard the fearsome dragon at the foot of Mount Aetna challenging them to fight again.
"Cowards!"his hundred serpent heads roared in scorn."You hide in the stars whilst your people suffer.Come down here and taste your death."
By this time the other's had arrived.
"It's a fools errand,"Poseidon said,looking down to where the earth lay in waste."He's the end of us."
Hades,the brother who was grim of countenance and unromantic,agreed."We will be floating in the void before long."
The three sisters,Hera,Demeter and Hestia,were silent,but each knew in their hearts that the day had come.
